Lagos divides naturally into several distinct areas, each with a different character and price point. The compact old town is where you will find most restaurants and nightlife. The waterfront Avenida runs along the marina toward Meia Praia. Just outside the center, residential neighborhoods offer quieter stays at lower prices. Best Neighborhoods in Lagos: Old Town, Marina and Beyond
Old Town (Centro Historico)
The historic center is the heart of Lagos: a warren of cobblestone pedestrian streets, whitewashed houses with wrought-iron balconies, and small squares that fill with restaurant tables after dark. The area is bounded roughly by the 16th-century walls to the east and south, Avenida dos Descobrimentos to the north, and the bus station area to the west. You are within a 5-minute walk of dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops along Rua 25 de Abril and Rua Candido dos Reis. The downside: street noise from bars continues until 2am on weekends, and you will not find parking near your accommodation (most old town streets are pedestrian-only). Best for: travelers who want nightlife and dining at their doorstep and do not mind noise. Average hotel rates: 80 to 150 EUR per night in summer.
Marina and Avenida
The area along Avenida dos Descobrimentos runs from the marina eastward toward Meia Praia. This is where you will find the large modern hotels, the train station (Lagos station, on the Linha do Algarve), and the bus terminal. The marina itself has cafes, boat tour kiosks, and a small supermarket. It is a 10-minute walk to the old town and a 5-minute walk to Meia Praia beach. The Avenida area is flatter and more accessible than the old town, with actual pavements and less cobblestone. Best for: families with strollers, travelers with early-morning trains or buses, and anyone who wants a modern hotel with a pool. Praia Dona Ana and Porto de Mos
The clifftop area south of the old town stretches from Praia Dona Ana westward to Porto de Mos beach. This is Lagos’s most scenic residential zone, with villas, small apartment blocks, and a few boutique guesthouses perched above the coves. You trade walking-distance access to restaurants for cliff views and relative quiet. Porto de Mos beach, at the western end, has two beachfront restaurants (open seasonally) and a large free car park. It is a 30-minute walk or a 7-minute drive to the old town. The area north of the N125 road and around the Bensafrim river is Lagos’s local residential zone. You will find Portuguese families living here, along with several supermarkets (Pingo Doce, Aldi, Lidl), hardware stores, and local cafes where a coffee (um cafe) costs 0.70 EUR. There are a handful of guesthouses and budget apartments, but this area is primarily for long-term stays or travelers on a tight budget who do not mind a 20 to 25-minute walk to the center. Best for: budget travelers, digital nomads staying a month or more, and anyone who wants to shop at regular supermarkets rather than tourist minimarkets. Average rates: 50 to 90 EUR. Luz and Burgau (Neighboring Villages)
Praia da Luz, 5km west of Lagos, is a small beach village with its own sandy bay, a handful of restaurants, and a more family-oriented pace. Burgau, 3km further west, is even smaller and quieter. Both are accessible by local bus (Onda line 4, roughly hourly, 2 EUR) or a 10-minute drive. Staying in Luz or Burgau and driving into Lagos for the day gives you a quieter base at lower prices.
