Lake Como (Lago di Como) stretches 46 kilometres (29 miles) through the Lombard Prealps of northern Italy, with the city of Como anchoring its southwestern tip and the Alps rising dramatically from its northern shores. The lake’s distinctive Y-shape creates three distinct branches that meet at Bellagio, the famous central town known as “the pearl of the lake.” At 199 metres (653 feet) above sea level with a maximum depth of 425 metres (1,394 feet), Lake Como is the third-largest lake in Italy and one of the deepest in Europe. The surrounding mountains create a microclimate that keeps winters milder than nearby Milan and summers warm without the oppressive humidity of the Po Valley. Daytime summer highs reach 28°C (82°F) in July, while winter lows hover around 1°C (34°F) in January. The lake water is swimmable from June through September, peaking at 24°C (75°F) in August.

Lake Como at a Glance

Como has drawn visitors since Roman times, when Pliny the Younger built his villas along these shores. Today the lake is known for three things: historic villas with terraced gardens cascading to the water, a collection of distinct lakeside towns each with their own character, and mountain scenery that frames every view. The western shore holds Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta, the two most visited gardens on the lake. The central hub of Bellagio splits the three branches with ferry connections in every direction. The eastern shore’s Varenna offers the best combination of romance and train access. The city of Como itself functions as the transport gateway, with direct trains to Milano Centrale (40 minutes, €5.80) and Switzerland (Lugano in 35 minutes, €12).

Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): Gardens erupt with camellias, magnolias, and rhododendrons. Villa Carlotta’s peak bloom hits mid-April to mid-May. Daytime highs climb from 13°C (55°F) to 21°C (70°F). Hotel rates are 30% below summer. May is the single best month for garden lovers.
  • Summer (June to August): Peak season with highs of 25°C to 28°C (77°F to 82°F), lake temperatures of 19°C to 24°C (66°F to 75°F), and every ferry, villa, and restaurant open. July and August bring maximum crowds and prices. Ferragosto (August 15) is the busiest week of the year.
  • Autumn (September to November): September delivers golden light, 23°C (73°F) highs, and a lake still warm at 21°C (70°F). October brings spectacular foliage and 30% to 40% below peak hotel rates. November is the wettest month (120mm) with many lakeside businesses closing for winter.
  • Winter (December to February): Quiet, cool, and limited. Daytime highs of 7°C to 9°C (45°F to 48°F). Many hotels and ferries reduce operations. Christmas markets in Como’s Piazza Cavour and New Year’s Eve fireworks draw weekend crowds. January and February are the most affordable months.
