But the best time for YOU depends on what you want: empty beaches and low prices come in May and October, while August brings peak crowds and peak costs. Best Time to Visit Lagos: Season by Season
Summer (June to August): Peak Weather, Peak Crowds
June through August is the classic Algarve summer: 25 to 28°C daytime highs, virtually zero rain, and sea temperatures reaching 21°C (70°F) by August. All boat tours, water sports operators, beach bars, and restaurants run at full capacity. The downside is crowds. Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo parking fills by 10am. Restaurants in the old town require reservations for dinner, and hotel rates hit their annual peak, with the first two weeks of August being the most expensive and crowded because that is when Portuguese families take their holidays. Book flights into Faro Airport (FAO) and hotels at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead for July and August. Shoulder Season (April to May, September to October): The Sweet Spot
May and September are the two best months for most travelers. May brings highs of 22°C (72°F), 10 hours of sunshine, and only 4 rainy days. Wildflowers carpet the clifftops, hiking trails around Ponta da Piedade are comfortable, and the sea at 17°C (63°F) is swimmable for those who do not mind cool water. September might be even better: highs of 26°C (79°F), the sea at its warmest (21°C / 70°F), and crowds thinning after the first week. Hotel rates in September run 15 to 25% below August prices. October still offers 23°C (73°F) highs and 7 hours of sun, but rain increases to 7 days and many seasonal businesses close after mid-October. Winter (November to March): Surf Season and Solitude
November through March is the Algarve’s low season. Daytime highs hover between 16 and 18°C (61 to 64°F), and November is the wettest month with 81mm of rain over 9 days. Many restaurants, especially beachfront ones, close from November through February. Several smaller hotels and guesthouses shut for annual maintenance in January and February. But this season has its own appeal: surfers get consistent Atlantic swells and empty lineups, hotel rates drop to roughly one-third of August prices, and you can walk Meia Praia at sunset without seeing another person. The Sao Martinho chestnut festival on November 11 and Carnival in February or March bring brief bursts of local activity.
