Koblenz’s calendar runs on three big dates: Carnival in late winter, Rhine in Flames on a summer Saturday in August and the Old Town Christmas markets in December. Around them sit wine festivals, food markets and classical music series that fill most weekends from May to October. Exact dates shift each year, so confirm before you book, and use our best time to visit Koblenz guide to see how these events affect prices and crowds.

Koblenz Events and Festivals: Carnival (February or March)

Koblenz’s Carnival is one of the Rhineland’s biggest, running from 11 November (the ‘fifth season’ opening) through to Ash Wednesday. The peak is the week before Lent: Weiberfastnacht on the Thursday, the Rose Monday (Rosenmontag) parade through the Altstadt on the following Monday and street parties along the Rhine. Dates move with Easter, so Carnival week falls anywhere from early February to early March. Hotels book out months ahead for Rose Monday, so reserve through our where to stay in Koblenz guide early if you plan to join.

Koblenz Events and Festivals: Rhine in Flames (August)

Rhine in Flames (Rhein in Flammen) is the city’s signature summer night: a fleet of illuminated boats sails up the Rhine while fireworks and Bengal fires light the banks, castles and vineyards. The Koblenz leg runs on the second Saturday of August, with the firework finale between Spay and Koblenz around 22:00. Tens of thousands line the river banks, and the best free spots go by early evening; paid boat tickets include the cruise and viewing. For a rooftop or riverside room that night, book months ahead, and check Koblenz weather by month for what August evenings feel like.

Koblenz Events and Festivals: Wine and Food Festivals

Koblenz’s wine heritage shows up in a string of festivals. The Deutsches Eck Weinfest, usually held in late June, pours Moselle and Middle Rhine Rieslings along the promenade. The Old Town Festival (Altstadtfest) fills the historic streets with stages and food stalls in July. In September and October the surrounding Moselle villages run harvest fests, and Winningen’s Federweißer weeks celebrate the young wine. Most are free to enter; you pay per glass, usually €3 to €5. See our Koblenz neighborhoods guide for where the festival streets sit.

Koblenz Events and Festivals: Christmas Markets (Late November to December)

The Old Town Christmas markets open around the last weekend of November and run to 23 December, spread across five squares including Jesuitenplatz, Am Plan and Münzplatz. The centrepiece is the Schängelmarkt with mulled wine (Glühwein, about €3.50 a cup), handicrafts and a children’s carousel. Hours are usually 11:00 to 20:00 daily, later on weekends. December’s weather is cold and dark, so pair a market visit with one of the indoor museums in our things to do in Koblenz guide.

Koblenz Events and Festivals: Music and Culture

The Kaiserin Augusta Festival in the Electoral Palace grounds and the Rhein-Mosel-Halle concert calendar bring classical and chamber music through summer. The Gauklerfestung street-theatre and juggling festival takes over the fortress terraces in late summer, and open-air cinema runs on the Rhine lawns in August.
