Teruel is compact and mostly walkable, but its three main areas feel distinct: the medieval historic center, the modern Ensanche to the south, and the quieter station side. Winter frost and summer heat are worth weighing before you choose a base, so check Teruel weather by month as part of our Teruel travel guide.
Neighborhoods in Teruel: The Historic Center (Casco Antiguo)
Plaza del Torico and the Medieval Core
The historic center fans out from the Plaza del Torico and holds all four Mudéjar towers, the cathedral, and the Lovers’ mausoleum. Narrow lanes run between brick-and-tile facades, and most bars and restaurants sit here. It suits first-time visitors and anyone on a short stay, though its pedestrian streets mean you will leave the car in a nearby lot. The towers and cathedral are covered in our things to do in Teruel guide, and the Bodas de Isabel festival takes over these lanes each February, in our events and festivals in Teruel guide. Budget hotels here average 50 to 90 € a night.
Neighborhoods in Teruel: El Ensanche
The Modern Expansion South of the Center
El Ensanche is the grid of newer apartment blocks and shops south of the ring road, roughly between the river and the Dinópolis turn-off. It is where many locals live and where you will find supermarkets, a cinema, and family hotels. It suits families driving in, since parking is easier than in the old town, and the walk to Plaza del Torico takes about 15 minutes. Hotels here average 45 to 80 € a night; see our where to stay in Teruel guide for picks.
Neighborhoods in Teruel: San Julián and the Station Side
Around the Station and the Óvalo
The area around the Renfe station and Paseo del Óvalo, including the San Julián district, climbs toward the old town via the neo-Mudéjar Escalinata. It is the most convenient base for rail travelers and sits closest to the Parque de Los Fueros. It suits short-stay and business visitors who want to be near transport.
