Teruel sits on a high plateau at 915 m (3,002 ft) on the southern edge of the Iberian System, which gives it one of the coldest and driest climates of any Spanish provincial capital. The city averages around 420 mm of rain a year, records roughly 20 to 22 frost days each January, and sees snow most winters. Here is the month-by-month breakdown with average highs, lows, and rainfall figures from the AEMET station at 902 m, part of our Teruel travel guide.
Teruel Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)
January is the coldest month, averaging 3.7°C (39°F), with daytime highs near 10°C (50°F) and overnight lows of -2.3°C (28°F). January and December each bring only about 19 to 20 mm of precipitation, but much of it falls as snow, with around 2 to 3 snow days per month. Daytime frost is common: AEMET records about 22 frost days in January. Pack a heavy coat, gloves, and shoes with grip if you visit between December and February, and check road conditions before driving the A-23, which can ice over overnight. Teruel Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)
Temperatures climb steadily through spring. March averages 8°C (46°F) with highs of 15°C (59°F), while May reaches a 14.3°C (58°F) average, highs of 21.8°C (71°F), and lows of 6.8°C (44°F). Spring is also the wettest season: April and May each deliver about 55 to 57 mm of rain, the highest monthly totals of the year. Bring layers and a light rain jacket, since mornings stay cold even when afternoons feel warm. This is a good season to visit the Mudéjar towers and the rest of the things to do in Teruel, since sights stay open with short queues.
Teruel Weather by Month: Summer (June to August)
July is the warmest month, averaging 22.2°C (72°F) with highs of 31.3°C (88°F), but nights cool to about 13°C (55°F) thanks to the altitude. Rainfall drops to 26 mm in July and around 35 mm in August, making this the driest stretch of the year. The big day-to-night swing of nearly 18°C means you will want a jumper for evenings even in midsummer. August highs hold near 31°C, and afternoon thunderstorms are possible but brief. Teruel Weather by Month: Autumn (September to November)
September stays pleasant at 17.5°C (64°F) on average, with highs of 25°C (77°F). October brings the year’s highest single-month rainfall at around 55 mm, and by November the average falls to 7°C (45°F) with lows near 2°C (36°F). Early autumn is ideal for walking the historic center; by late November the first frosts return. October’s San Fernando fair and other events and festivals in Teruel make autumn worth a visit despite the rain.
