Weimar sits in the Thuringian Basin of central Germany, 265 m above sea level, in one of the driest parts of the country. The city has a continental climate with four clear seasons: cold winters with light snow, warm summers with the most rain, and mild, changeable spring and autumn. Annual rainfall totals around 580 mm and sunshine averages about 1,550 hours. This Weimar weather by month guide breaks down temperatures, rainfall and daylight for each month so you know what to pack, and it pairs with our full Weimar city guide.
Weimar Weather by Month: Climate Overview
July is the warmest month with an average high of 23°C (73°F), while January is the coldest with an average low of -3°C (27°F). The temperature range between the coldest and warmest month is about 18°C (32°F). Rain is spread fairly evenly through the year, but the wettest months are May, June and July (55-75 mm each), and the driest is February at around 35-45 mm. Snow falls mainly between December and February, with an average of 15-20 snow days per winter. If you want to know what the conditions mean for sightseeing, see our things to do in Weimar guide, which lists indoor options for rainy days, and the Weimar neighborhoods guide for where each district sits.
Weimar Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)
Winters are cold but rarely extreme. January averages a high of 2°C (36°F) and a low of -3°C (27°F), with about 40 mm of precipitation. December is similar, with highs of 3°C (37°F) and lows of -2°C (28°F). Daylight is short, around 8 hours in December, and the sun appears for only about 50-60 hours across the whole month. Pack a warm coat, waterproof shoes and gloves; the Christmas market runs through most of December, so you will be standing outside in near-freezing temperatures after dark. Weimar Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)
Spring warms up quickly. March still feels cold with highs of 8°C (46°F) and lows of 0°C (32°F), but by May the average high reaches 18°C (64°F) and the low 8°C (46°F). Rainfall picks up from 40 mm in March to 55 mm in May. This is when Park an der Ilm and the Belvedere gardens come into bloom, and it is a good time to visit for lower prices than summer. Layers work best because mornings can still be close to freezing in March while afternoons feel warm in the sun. See the best time to visit Weimar guide for how spring fits into a full trip plan.
Weimar Weather by Month: Summer (June to August)
Summer is the warmest and wettest season. July and August both average highs of 23°C (73°F) and lows of 12-13°C (54-55°F), while June is slightly cooler at 21°C (70°F). July is the rainiest month of the year with about 75 mm falling over roughly 15 wet days, so expect afternoon showers even in otherwise sunny weather. Sunshine peaks at about 210 hours in July. Daytime highs above 30°C (86°F) happen a few times each summer but are not the norm. A light jacket is useful for evenings, which drop into the low teens. Book lodging early for July and August; the where to stay in Weimar guide covers the main hotel areas.
Weimar Weather by Month: Autumn (September to November)
September is a mild, pleasant month with highs of 18°C (64°F) and lows of 9°C (48°F), and around 45 mm of rain. By November temperatures drop to highs of 6°C (43°F) and lows of 1°C (34°F). October and November are the foggiest months of the year, and the famous Onion Market weekend in mid-October can be cold and damp. Autumn colours in the parks and the surrounding Thuringian hills peak in mid to late October. This is a quieter, cheaper time to travel; check the Weimar events and festivals calendar before you book, since the Onion Market fills the town.
