Graciosa’s festival calendar reflects the island’s deep Catholic traditions, seafaring heritage, and tight-knit community spirit. Events here feel genuinely local, they’re put on by and for the island’s 4,300 residents, with visitors welcomed as honoured guests rather than a target market. The biggest celebration is the Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres in August, but the Festas do Espírito Santo that run through spring and summer give you a window into authentic Azorean culture on any visit between May and September. Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres (August)
Graciosa’s largest and most important festival takes place during the week leading up to the second Sunday of August. Santa Cruz da Graciosa transforms with elaborate flower carpets (tapetes de flores) laid along the streets, intricate decorations, and religious processions carrying the image of Senhor Santo Cristo through town. The celebrations blend solemn Catholic tradition with live music, street food, and fireworks over the harbour. Accommodation on the island fills completely during this week, so book months in advance if you plan to attend. This is the one time of year when Graciosa feels genuinely busy.
Festas do Espírito Santo (May to September)
The Holy Spirit festivals are the cultural backbone of the Azores, and Graciosa celebrates them with the same devotion as every other island. Each parish holds its own Festa do Espírito Santo on a different Sunday during the spring and summer months. The celebrations follow a centuries-old tradition: a religious mass and procession, the coronation of a child emperor (a symbolic representation of the Holy Spirit), and the distribution of sopas do Espírito Santo, a communal meal of meat broth, bread, and mint shared freely with anyone who attends. Impérios (small, colourful chapels) in each parish serve as the focal point. Dates vary by parish each year, so ask at the tourist office in Santa Cruz for the current schedule when you arrive.
Semana do Mar / Sea Week (August)
Running alongside or close to the Santo Cristo festivities in August, Semana do Mar celebrates Graciosa’s maritime heritage with boat races, fishing competitions, seafood feasts, and live music along the Santa Cruz waterfront. It’s a lively, informal event where local fishermen show off their skills and the whole town gathers by the harbour. Grilled limpets (lapas), fresh tuna, and local wines flow freely.
Carnaval (February or March)
While smaller than Terceira’s famous Carnaval, Graciosa’s celebration still fills Santa Cruz with colour, costumes, and street dances. Traditional danças (folk dances) and bailes (dances) take place in the local community halls, and locals of all ages participate in parades. The date varies with the liturgical calendar, falling in February or early March. It’s a cheerful bright spot in the winter off-season.
Festa de São Mateus (September 21)
The feast day of Saint Matthew brings celebrations to Praia (São Mateus), the island’s northern fishing village. A religious procession, community meal, and evening music mark the occasion. It’s smaller and more intimate than the August festivals in Santa Cruz, offering a glimpse of village life on the quieter north coast.
Festa de Nossa Senhora da Saúde (August 15)
On the Feast of the Assumption, a pilgrimage follows the coastal path to the tiny Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Saúde chapel beside the Farol da Ponta da Barca lighthouse. The clifftop setting, 71 metres above the Atlantic, makes this one of the most dramatically situated religious celebrations in the Azores. Even if you’re not attending for religious reasons, the procession route offers spectacular northern coastline views.
Festival de Verão (July or August)
Graciosa’s summer music festival brings Portuguese and Azorean artists to Santa Cruz for open-air concerts. Genres range from traditional folk to contemporary pop and rock. Dates vary each summer, typically falling on a weekend in July or early August. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly.
Feira de Artesanato (Summer)
During the summer months, a crafts fair showcases Graciosa’s traditional artisans. You’ll find hand-embroidered linens, lacework, basketry, and local pottery. It’s an opportunity to buy authentic souvenirs directly from makers and see traditional Azorean crafts being demonstrated. Dates and locations vary, so check with the Santa Cruz tourist office.
