Graciosa Best Time to Visit

Portugal › Azores › Graciosa

Graciosa is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to do. The island’s mild subtropical climate means there’s no truly bad month, though some seasons are better suited to specific activities. Summer (July to September) delivers the warmest weather and busiest festival calendar, while spring and early autumn offer the ideal balance of pleasant conditions and uncrowded attractions. For more on planning your trip, check our guides to the best time to visit, things to do, where to stay, travel tips, events and festivals guide, getting around guide, our weather by month breakdown, and the main Graciosa guide.

Peak Season: July and August

July and August are the warmest months with daytime highs of 24 to 25°C (75 to 77°F) and sea temperatures peaking at 23°C (73°F). These are the best months for swimming, diving, and whale watching, with all operators running full schedules from Santa Cruz harbour. The island’s biggest festival, Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, fills the second week of August with flower carpets, processions, and fireworks. Semana do Mar adds boat races and seafood celebrations. The downside: accommodation and car rentals book out weeks in advance, and flights from Terceira and São Miguel are at their most expensive. Expect to pay 30 to 50% more for lodging than in shoulder season.

Shoulder Season: May to June and September to October

For most travellers, this is the sweet spot. May and June bring blooming hydrangeas, daytime highs of 19 to 21°C (66 to 70°F), and rainfall of just 45 to 60mm. Trails like the PR01GRA caldera rim route are at their greenest and most comfortable for hiking. September offers summer-level sea temperatures of 22°C (72°F) with far fewer visitors, while October delivers excellent whale watching, harvest-season vineyard tours, and daytime highs still reaching 21°C (70°F). Prices drop noticeably from peak season, and you’ll rarely need to book restaurants or attractions in advance. The Festas do Espírito Santo run on various Sundays from May through September, giving you a taste of authentic Azorean culture regardless of which shoulder month you choose.

Off-Season: November to April

November through April is the quietest period on Graciosa. Daytime highs range from 16 to 18°C (61 to 64°F) and rainfall peaks at 110 to 120mm in November, December, and January. Ferry schedules to other islands are reduced, and some smaller guesthouses close for the season. That said, this is when you’ll experience the island at its most authentic: empty trails, deserted thermal baths, and the genuine rhythm of a small Atlantic fishing community. Carnival in February or March brings colourful street celebrations to Santa Cruz da Graciosa. Prices are at their lowest, and flights from Terceira (a 30-minute hop on SATA Air Açores) run daily year-round. If you don’t mind some rain and cool evenings, the off-season rewards you with solitude and lower costs.

Best Time by Activity

  • Whale and dolphin watching: April to October, with peak sightings of blue and fin whales during spring migration (April to June). Sperm whales are resident year-round and can be spotted even in winter on calm days.
  • Hiking: April to June and September to October offer the most comfortable temperatures (17 to 21°C / 63 to 70°F) and driest trails. The PR01GRA caldera loop is especially rewarding in May when hydrangeas line the path.
  • Swimming and thermal baths: July to September for ocean swimming (sea at 22 to 23°C / 72 to 73°F). The Carapacho thermal baths, fed by 40°C (104°F) mineral water, are pleasant year-round.
  • Diving: June to October offers the best visibility (15 to 30 metres) and warmest water. Sites around Ilhéu de Baixo feature caves and volcanic formations.
  • Festivals and culture: August for the big Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo. May through September for Espírito Santo celebrations in individual parishes.
  • Budget travel: November to March offers the lowest airfares and accommodation rates, with flights from Terceira sometimes as low as 50 EUR one-way on SATA.
