Graciosa is the quietest inhabited island in the Azores and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2007. It’s also the flattest island in the archipelago, which makes it uniquely suited to cycling and gentle exploration. Inside the Caldeira da Graciosa, a vast volcanic crater, you’ll find the Furna do Enxofre, one of the most impressive accessible lava caves in the Atlantic, crowned by a vaulted ceiling 50 metres high. Thermal seawater baths at Carapacho bubble up at 40°C beside the ocean, and small-scale whale watching trips from Santa Cruz harbour get you closer to sperm whales and dolphins than the larger operations on São Miguel ever could. With just 4,300 residents and around 150 visitor beds, Graciosa rewards travellers who value solitude and authenticity over resort infrastructure.

Where Is Graciosa?

Graciosa sits in the Central Group of the Azores, roughly 1,500 kilometres west of mainland Portugal. It’s the northernmost island in the Central Group, located about 60 kilometres northwest of Terceira and 40 kilometres northeast of São Jorge. The island is oval-shaped, measuring 12.5 by 7 kilometres with a total area of 61 square kilometres. Its highest point is the caldera rim at roughly 402 metres above sea level. Graciosa’s uniquely flat profile, a product of its older, more eroded volcanic geology, sets it apart from the steep, mountainous silhouettes of its neighbours.
