Tavira’s calendar runs on local saints, food fairs, and summer concerts rather than big international festivals. Most events are free and held in the open air, and they cluster in June, September, and December. This guide lists the dates worth building a trip around, and our Tavira travel tips page covers how to get to each one.
Events and Festivals in Tavira: Spring
Carnaval
Carnaval fills the streets of Tavira with a parade of floats and costumed dancers in late February or early March, depending on the Easter date. The main procession runs along the riverside and through the Praça da República, and the local samba-style groups rehearse for weeks beforehand. It is the liveliest weekend of the year outside summer, and restaurants fill up, so book dinner ahead. The date moves each year, so check our best time to visit Tavira page to see how it lines up with the weather.
Semana Santa and Easter Processions
Holy Week brings candlelit processions through the old town from Palm Sunday to Easter, led by the local religious brotherhoods. The Good Friday evening procession, carrying the image of the Senhor dos Passos, winds from the churches around the centre and is the most atmospheric. Dates shift each year with Easter, and the town is quieter than in summer, so it suits a calm cultural stay.
Events and Festivals in Tavira: Summer
Festas da Cidade de Tavira (São João)
The city festival runs for about ten days around 24 June, the feast of São João, with open-air concerts, a craft fair, and a firework display over the river. Stages are set up in the Jardim do Coreto and along the waterfront, and most acts are free. It draws a mostly Portuguese crowd and is a good excuse to visit outside the peak August heat. Pair it with the things to do in Tavira list to fill the days between shows.
Summer Concert Series
Through July and August, the municipal band and touring acts play weekly evening concerts, often in the bandstand garden or on the castle esplanade. The schedule is published on the town hall noticeboards and at the tourist office on Praça da República. Most are free and start around 21:30, after the heat has eased.
Events and Festivals in Tavira: Autumn and Winter
Feira da Dieta Mediterrânica
The Mediterranean Diet Fair takes over the Jardim do Coreto during the first week of September. Stalls sell olive oil, honey, preserves, salt, and local wines from across the Algarve and neighbouring Andalusia, with cookery demonstrations and folk music in the evenings. It is free to enter, and the weather is still warm, so it is one of the best weekends of the year to eat your way around the historic centre covered in our neighborhoods in Tavira guide.
Feira de Santa Iria
Santa Iria fair runs for several days around 20 October, mixing a traditional funfair with agricultural stalls, livestock, and food vendors. It is held on the fairground north of the centre and is a working local fair rather than a tourist event. Entry is free and it gives a glimpse of Algarve life outside the summer season.
Festa de Santa Luzia and Christmas
The fishing village of Santa Luzia celebrates its patron saint on 13 December with a procession and a street fair along the harbour. Back in Tavira, the Christmas lights go up in early December, and a small market and nativity scene run through the month. December weather is mild by northern European standards, around 17°C (63°F) by day, so the lights and the feasts make a good winter break. See the Tavira weather by month page for what to pack, and where to stay in Tavira for places to book during festival weekends.
