Tavira is a riverside town of about 26,000 people in Portugal’s eastern Algarve, 30 km east of Faro. It averages 3,000 sunshine hours and 560 mm of rain a year, with summer highs of 31°C (88°F) and a mild winter that rarely drops below 7°C (45°F) at night. The town is known for its Roman bridge, its Moorish castle, and the 11 km Ilha de Tavira beach reached by ferry across the Ria Formosa lagoon.
Welcome to Tavira
The Gilão River splits Tavira’s old town in two, and most of what you will want to see sits within a ten-minute walk of the seven-arch bridge that joins the banks. On the north side the castle walls rise above whitewashed lanes, and on the south side the restaurants and tiled churches cluster toward the riverfront. It is the calmest of the Algarve’s main towns, more given to seafood lunches and salt-pan walks than nightclubs, and it makes an easy base for beach days on the barrier islands.
