Catanzaro, the capital of Calabria, sits on a hilltop ridge about 320 metres above sea level and roughly 8 km from the Ionian Sea. That elevation gives the city a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa): hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters, with about 995 mm of rain a year spread over 88 wet days. Most rain falls between October and March, while July averages just 20 mm. The coast at Catanzaro Lido, a few kilometres downhill, runs 1 to 3°C warmer than the hilltop centre. See our things to do for the full list of sights and day trips.
