Catanzaro’s event calendar is anchored by the Festa di San Vitaliano in mid-July, when the whole historic centre turns into a street festival of food, music and religious procession. Summer is when the city is at its liveliest, with the Vivi il Centro program running from late June into August. Winter is quieter, with Christmas markets as the main draw. See our weather by month for the monthly temperatures, rainfall and sea temperatures.

Events in Catanzaro: Festa di San Vitaliano (14 to 16 July)

The patron saint festival runs from 14 to 16 July, peaking on 16 July with the procession of San Vitaliano’s reliquary from the Basilica dell’Immacolata through the historic centre, joined by the archbishop and city authorities. The surrounding program, branded “Tutti festeggiano San Vitaliano”, spreads concerts, guided tours and street food across Corso Mazzini, Piazza Prefettura and the Giardini Nicholas Green. In 2025 the main stage hosted singer Nina Zilli on 15 July, plus a reenactment of the 1528 siege of the city on 16 July. Expect the historic centre to be packed from about 18:00 each evening. See our neighborhoods guide for how the districts compare.

Events in Catanzaro: Pitta Days

Pitta Days is the food strand of the San Vitaliano festival, built around the pitta catanzarese, a soft, braided local bread with De.Co. (denominazione comunale) certification. Tasting stands, show-cooking and workshops line Corso Mazzini, and local bakers display the traditional product alongside craft beer and regional wine. It is free to walk through; tastings are pay-as-you-go. The 2025 edition also brought around fifty pastry chefs from across Italy for a summer panettone event. Events in Catanzaro: Vivi il Centro (Late June to Early August)

Vivi il Centro is the city’s summer program, running roughly 26 June to 8 August, with concerts, readings, aperitivi and street performances spread across the historic centre’s squares and monuments. Events are mostly free and start in the early evening, so it is easy to combine with dinner. Check the schedule on the visit.catanzaro.it website for the current year’s lineup, as locations rotate between Piazza Prefettura, Piazzetta Fazzari and the Giardini Nicholas Green. See our Catanzaro travel guide for the complete city overview.

Events in Catanzaro: Madonna di Porto Salvo (Catanzaro Lido)

The seaside district of Catanzaro Lido celebrates the Madonna di Porto Salvo, tied to the fishing and maritime community. The feast falls in the summer months, with a religious procession along the seafront and evening stalls and fireworks on the Lungomare Stefano Pugliese. It is smaller than the San Vitaliano festival but draws the Lido’s residents and summer visitors.

Events in Catanzaro: Christmas and Winter

From early December, the historic centre hosts Christmas markets and lighting displays along Corso Mazzini, with food stalls and gift vendors through to the Epiphany on 6 January. New Year is marked with a public celebration in the main squares. This is the quietest season for tourism, so it is easy to see the sights without crowds, though the weather is wet.
