Catanzaro splits cleanly into two halves: the hilltop historic centre and the seaside district of Catanzaro Lido, with the modern administrative area of Germaneto and the beach resort of Giovino filling in the edges. Where you stay should follow what you plan to do. Each area below lists what it is known for, who it suits and typical hotel prices. See our best time to visit for the month-by-month planning breakdown.

Neighborhoods in Catanzaro: Centro Storico (Historic Centre)

The historic centre sits on a ridge about 320 metres up, bounded by the Fiumarella valley on one side and the Musofalo gorge on the other. This is where you find the Duomo, the Norman castle remains, Teatro Politeama and Corso Mazzini, the pedestrian shopping street. It suits first-time visitors and culture-focused travellers who want to walk between sights. Hotels here are small 4-star city hotels and B&Bs, typically €70 to €130 a night. Note that parking is limited, and the streets are steep. See our things to do for the full list of sights and day trips.

Neighborhoods in Catanzaro: Catanzaro Lido (Seaside)

Catanzaro Lido is the coastal district about 8 km downhill from the centre, built around the long sandy beach and the Lungomare Stefano Pugliese promenade. It suits beach holidaymakers and families from June to September, with lido clubs, seafood restaurants and a marina. Accommodation ranges from 4-star beachfront hotels like the Hotel Palace to 3-star hotels and B&Bs, roughly €60 to €160 a night in summer and much less off-season. The Catanzaro Lido railway station connects to the hilltop and the Ionian line. See our events and festivals for the festival calendar.

Neighborhoods in Catanzaro: Giovino (Beach Resort and Pine Forest)

Giovino sits at the northern end of the Catanzaro coast, fronted by a pine forest (pineta di Giovino) with cycle paths and picnic areas, and home to a municipal Olympic-sized pool. It is quieter and greener than central Catanzaro Lido and suits families and anyone who wants beach access plus open space. A handful of seafront hotels and residences sit here, generally €80 to €150 a night in peak season. It is a 10 to 15 minute drive from both the Lido and the hilltop centre. See our travel tips and FAQ for airport, transport and practical answers.

Neighborhoods in Catanzaro: Germaneto (Modern and University Area)

Germaneto is the modern administrative district west of the centre, housing the Regione Calabria offices, the Magna Graecia University and the university hospital. It suits business travellers, visiting academics and anyone needing fast highway access to Lamezia Terme airport, about 35 km away. There are a few modern business hotels here, around €70 to €110 a night, but little in the way of sightseeing or evening life, so most leisure visitors stay elsewhere and drive in when needed. See our Catanzaro travel guide for the complete city overview.
