The best time to visit Beaune for most travelers is mid-May through June or September, when daytime highs sit between 16°C (61°F) and 26°C (79°F), rain is manageable, and the vines are green or being harvested. July and August are warmest but busiest, while November to March are cheap and quiet but cold and damp. Your ideal window depends on whether you are coming for wine, weather, or the auction weekend. Start with the Beaune weather by month breakdown, then use the sections below to lock in dates. This article is part of our Beaune weather guide.
Best Time to Visit Beaune for Weather (May to September)
May through September gives you the most reliable dry, mild conditions. May averages 20°C (68°F), June 23°C (73°F), and July and August peak at 26°C (79°F) with around 235 hours of monthly sunshine. Rain still falls about 8 to 12 days a month, so pack a light jacket. For comfortable walking and cycling without heat, pick late May, June, or early September; the Cote de Beaune villages are all linked by the flat Route des Grands Crus, so this is the season for a two-wheeled tour. The cellars and sights are listed in our things to do in Beaune guide.
Best Time to Visit Beaune for Wine and the Harvest (September to October)
- Harvest (vendange) runs through September, when wineries press and rack the new vintage. Many estates host open-cellar days, and you can watch grapes arrive at the cuverie. The areas are mapped in our Beaune neighborhoods guide.
- September averages 21°C (70°F) by day and 10°C (50°F) at night with 65 mm of rain, warm enough for terrace lunches after a morning tasting. Hotel picks are in our where to stay in Beaune guide.
- October cools to 16°C (61°F) with 70 mm of rain, but the vines turn gold and the tasting rooms are calmer than in peak summer. Book cellar visits ahead for the top names like Joseph Drouhin and Bouchard Pere et Fils. Getting there and tipping are covered in our Beaune travel tips guide.
Best Time to Visit Beaune for the Wine Auction (Third Weekend of November)
The Hospices de Beaune wine auction lands on the third Sunday of November (15 November 2026), the centerpiece of Les Trois Glorieuses, three days of dinners, tastings, and the Sotheby’s-run charity sale. November weather is cold at 9°C (48°F) by day and 3°C (37°F) at night, but the town is full and lively. Book accommodation 6 to 12 months ahead and expect hotel prices to double or triple for this single weekend. See the Beaune events and festivals guide for the full schedule.
Best Time to Visit Beaune for Lowest Prices (November to March)
November to March is the value season. Room rates can drop 40 to 60 percent off July levels, and you will often have the cellars to yourself on weekdays. The tradeoff is weather: January averages 5°C (41°F) by day and 0°C (32°F) at night, and some smaller restaurants and tasting rooms close for a winter break in January and February. If you do not mind the cold, late November after the auction and January are the two cheapest stretches of the year.
Best Time to Visit Beaune to Avoid Crowds (January to March, November)
Crowds peak in July and August and again on the auction weekend in November. To visit with minimal people, target January, February, March, or the first half of November. The Hotel-Dieu museum stays open every day of the year, so you can tour the 15th-century wards and the famous polychrome roof without queues. Reserve tastings at a few select wineries rather than relying on walk-ins, since some smaller cellars cut opening days in winter.
Worst Months to Visit Beaune
- January and February are the coldest (0°C to 7°C, 32°F to 45°F) and dampest, with bare vines, short days, and periodic restaurant closures.
- August combines peak heat (26°C, 79°F) with peak domestic holiday crowds, and a few wine estates reduce tasting hours for staff vacations.
- The auction weekend in mid-November is not bad weather-wise, but room prices and restaurant demand spike, so it is the worst value window unless the auction is your reason for coming.
