Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy, a walled town of about 22,000 people in the Cote d’Or, roughly 320 km southeast of Paris. It has a semi-continental climate with cold, damp winters, warm summers, and about 700 mm of rain a year, spread evenly enough to sustain the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines that made the Cote de Beaune famous. This Beaune weather guide covers the climate month by month, the best times to visit, things to do, events, neighborhoods, where to stay, and practical travel tips.
Welcome to Beaune
Beaune’s old town is ringed by 15th-century ramparts and anchored by the Hotel-Dieu, the former charity hospital founded in 1443 whose glazed multicolored roof is the town’s defining image. Around it, cellars and wine bars line the streets, and the Route des Grands Crus leads south through Pommard, Volnay, and Meursault in under 15 minutes by car. Most visitors come for two things: touring the Hotel-Dieu and tasting wine, and a two-day stay covers both comfortably.
Beaune Weather at a Glance
Beaune’s climate is semi-continental, warmer and drier than Paris but cooler than the Mediterranean coast. July and August are the warmest months at 26°C (79°F) by day and 14°C (57°F) at night, while January is the coldest at 5°C (41°F) by day and 0°C (32°F) at night. Rain averages about 700 mm a year over roughly 180 rain days, peaking slightly in May (75 mm) and October and November (70 mm each). Sunshine runs from about 45 hours in December to 235 hours in July.
The practical upshot is a long visiting season from April to October, with the wine harvest in September and the auction in mid-November as the two signature moments. For the full monthly numbers, see the Beaune weather by month article.

Location and Geography
Beaune sits in the Cote d’Or department of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comte region, on the flat Saone plain where it meets the east-facing limestone slopes of the Cote de Beaune. The escarpment is the key to the climate: the vines on the slopes catch morning sun and drain well, while the town below stays slightly cooler and more sheltered. Dijon lies 40 km north, and the A6 motorway and the Paris-Lyon TGV line both pass through, which keeps Beaune far more accessible than its size suggests.
