Pipa is easy to reach from Natal and safe to explore on foot, but a few practical details, airport transfers, money and tipping, will save you time and cash. These travel tips cover the questions travellers ask most before visiting.

Pipa Travel Tips: Getting There and Around

Which airport serves Pipa?

The nearest airport is Natal’s São Gonçalo do Amarante International Airport (NAT), about 85 km north of Pipa. From the terminal it is roughly a 90-minute drive to the village. Shared transfers run around R$80 to R$120 per person; a private taxi or pre-booked transfer costs R$250 to R$350 for the car. There is no airport in Pipa itself.

How do I get around Pipa?

The village is walkable end to end in about 30 minutes, and most visitors never need a vehicle. For the dunes, lagoons or Tibau do Sul, use moto-taxis (a few reais within town) or hire a buggy with a driver from R$150 for a short route. If you drive from Natal, note that the RN-003 road is paved and parking in Pipa is mostly in hotel lots. The village layout is mapped in the Pipa neighborhoods guide.

Is it better to fly into Natal or drive from elsewhere in Brazil?

For most international visitors, flying into Natal (NAT) is the only practical option; it has direct flights from São Paulo, Rio and a handful of European cities. From Recife, a second option, the drive is about 4 hours south. Buses from Natal’s rodoviária to Pipa run several times a day for roughly R$15 to R$25 and take about 2 hours.

Pipa Travel Tips: Money, Language and Tipping

What currency is used, and do I need cash?

Brazil uses the real (R$). Many pousadas and restaurants in Pipa accept cards, but beach barracas, moto-taxis and some small bars are cash only, so carry R$150 to R$300 in small notes. ATMs in Pipa are limited; withdraw in Natal before you leave if possible.

What language is spoken?

Portuguese. English is spoken at larger hotels and beach clubs but not reliably in small restaurants or shops. Download an offline translator and learn a few basics: bom dia (good morning), quanto custa (how much) and obrigado (thank you).

How much should I tip?

Restaurants typically add a 10 percent service charge (serviço) to the bill, so no extra tip is expected. If no service charge appears, 10 percent is standard. Round up for taxi drivers and leave a few reais for housekeeping at your pousada.

Pipa Travel Tips: Safety, Water and Health

Is Pipa safe?

Pipa is one of the safer beach towns in northeast Brazil and violent crime against tourists is rare. The main risks are opportunistic theft, so do not leave phones or wallets unattended on the sand or in buggies, and avoid walking alone on unlit trails at night. Use the lit main streets after dark.

Can I drink the tap water?

No. Drink bottled or filtered water in Pipa; most pousadas provide filtered water, and restaurants serve bottled water. Avoid ice in street drinks and wash fruit carefully. Tap water is fine for showering and brushing teeth with a quick rinse.

Do I need a visa and any vaccines?

Visitors from the US, UK, EU, Canada and Australia do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days, though requirements change, so check before booking. No vaccines are required for Pipa, but yellow fever vaccination is recommended if you will travel onward to inland Brazil. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, as the sun here is strong year-round.
