The best months for dry, mild weather in Atami are April, May, October and November, when highs sit between 18°C and 23°C (65°F and 73°F) and rain is lower than the June and September peaks. This guide breaks the year into four windows so you can weigh weather against cost and crowds, with the Atami weather by month data and our events and festivals in Atami calendar as reference.
Best Time to Visit Atami: April to May for Mild Weather
April averages 14.5°C (58.1°F) and May 18.5°C (65.3°F), with 168.1mm and 172.6mm of rain respectively. The plum season has ended and the cherry trees along the Itogawa River bloom in late March to early April. Hotel prices stay moderate because Golden Week at the end of April is the only spike. May has the year’s most reliable sunshine outside August at 184.1 hours, a strong month for the sights in our things to do in Atami guide.
Best Time to Visit Atami: July to August for Beaches and Fireworks
August averages 26.4°C (79.5°F) and the sea reaches about 26°C (79°F), so Sun Beach is at its best. This is also peak season for the Atami Sea Fireworks Festival, which runs shows across the summer. Expect the highest hotel rates of the year and book ryokans two to three months ahead, with options in our where to stay in Atami guide. Avoid late June if you dislike rain: it averages 251.5mm over 12.4 wet days.
Best Time to Visit Atami: October to November for Fewer Crowds
October averages 18.7°C (65.7°F) and November 14.0°C (57.2°F). Typhoons can push rain into September and early October, but by November rainfall falls to 108.4mm. Room rates drop after the summer peak and the autumn fireworks shows draw fewer visitors than the summer ones. This is the best value window for onsen stays, and the Atami travel guide page covers the town in full.
Best Time to Visit Atami: January to February for Plum Blossoms
January and February average 7.0°C and 7.4°C (44.6°F and 45.3°F), the coolest months but far milder than Tokyo’s inland cold. This is when the Atami Plum Garden holds its plum festival, running from January 10 into early March, with 472 trees of 59 varieties. Hotel prices are at their lowest and winter fireworks shows continue twice a month.
