Atami is a hot-spring resort town of about 34,000 people on the northeast coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, facing Sagami Bay. Its name means hot ocean, and the town has drawn bathers since the 8th century, now served by a Shinkansen stop that puts it 40 minutes from Tokyo. This guide covers the climate, the seasons and where to stay, with links to the full seven-article cluster below.

Welcome to Atami

Atami is the closest seaside onsen town to the capital, built on steep slopes that drop from forested hills into a bay ringed by mountains. The town’s modern history follows the 1964 opening of the Tokaido Shinkansen, which turned a traditional hot-spring retreat into a day-trip and weekend destination for Tokyo. Today it mixes old ryokans and a 1959 hilltop castle with a sandy beach and a year-round fireworks series.
