Atami runs events in every season, led by a fireworks festival that fires on set dates from April through February and a plum festival that opens Japan’s flower-viewing calendar. Dates below are for the 2026 to early 2027 season and are worth confirming before you travel. Pair the calendar with our best time to visit Atami guide to match an event with good weather, and use the Atami travel guide page for the full town overview.
Events and Festivals in Atami: The Sea Fireworks Festival
The Atami Sea Fireworks Festival is a year-round series launched over Atami Bay, with about 16 shows in the 2026 season from April 26 through a February 21, 2027 finale. Shows run 20:20 to 20:40, extended to 20:15 in July and August, and are free to watch from Sun Beach or Shinsui Park. The bowl of mountains around the bay echoes the blasts, and the finale is the Sky Niagara cascade. Summer shows launch about 5,000 shells, and the beach viewing spots are covered in our things to do in Atami guide.
Events and Festivals in Atami: Plum Blossom Festival
The Atami Plum Festival runs from January 10 to early March at the Atami Plum Garden. Admission is 300 yen during the festival and 100 yen for guests staying in the city. Because Atami’s plum trees bloom earlier than anywhere else in Japan, this is the first place near Tokyo to see blossom each year, a result of the mild winter in our Atami weather by month guide, with stalls and evening illuminations on weekends.
Events and Festivals in Atami: Kinomiya Shrine Festival
Kinomiya Shrine’s main festival falls in mid-July and is known for its portable shrine processions through the town. It dates back centuries and draws local worshippers and visitors to the shrine precinct. Expect food stalls and evening crowds around the Kinomiya area, a short walk from JR Kinomiya Station in the Atami neighborhoods neighborhood.
Events and Festivals in Atami: Winter and New Year
Atami keeps its fireworks running on two December dates, including a Christmas Day show, and New Year visitors crowd the shrines for hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year. January is also when the town’s early-blooming atami-zakura cherry trees open, one of the earliest cherry blossoms in Japan.
