Ningbo sits on the East China Sea coast in Zhejiang province, where a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) brings four clear seasons: a cool, damp winter, a quick spring, a hot and humid summer, and a mild, dry autumn. The city averages 17.6°C (63.7°F) across the year and receives roughly 1,400mm of rain, most of it falling during the June plum-rain season and the late-summer typhoon window. Ningbo Weather in Spring (March to May)

Spring is short and changeable. March still feels wintry with highs around 16°C (61°F), but by April the city warms to 21°C (70°F) and the cherry and magnolia trees around Moon Lake and Tianyi Pavilion come into flower. Rainfall climbs through the season, from 117mm in March to 204mm in May, and the air stays humid. Pack a light jacket plus an umbrella; mornings can be 8-12°C while afternoons reach the low 20s.

Ningbo Weather in Summer (June to August)

Summer is hot, wet, and humid. July is the warmest month, averaging 32°C (90°F) by day and 25°C (77°F) at night, with heat that often feels heavier thanks to relative humidity that peaks around 81% in June. June is the wettest month at 349mm during the plum rains (meiyu), and typhoon season runs roughly August to early October. If you visit in summer, plan indoor stops and schedule outdoor sights for early morning; see the Ningbo travel tips page for typhoon and safety advice.

Ningbo Weather in Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is Ningbo’s best weather window. September cools to 28°C (82°F) and rain eases after the typhoon peak, while October averages a comfortable 22°C (72°F) with only 118mm of rain. November drops to 18°C (64°F) and stays mostly dry, and the ginkgo trees around Dongqian Lake turn gold. This is also peak seafood season, with the autumn seafood festivals opening after the fishing moratorium lifts.

Ningbo Weather in Winter (December to February)

Winter is chilly, cloudy, and damp, though rarely severe. January averages 10°C (50°F) by day and 4°C (39°F) at night, and December is the driest month at 62mm. The cold is a wet, penetrating kind, so bring layers. On the plus side, hotel prices drop sharply and sights are empty, so it suits budget-focused stays if you do not mind gray days.

Ningbo Weather Data: Humidity, Sunshine and Sea Temperature

Relative humidity averages about 76% year-round and peaks at 81% in June. The city gets roughly 1,700 sunshine hours a year, with the most in July (219 hours) and the least in January (102 hours). Sea temperatures off the Ningbo coast range from about 9°C (48°F) in February to 27°C (81°F) in August, so swimming is only realistic from late June to September, and even then most locals swim at the beaches around Xiangshan in the Beilun and Zhenhai district.
