Ningbo’s climate makes spring and autumn the two clear winners for travel, with a hot, humid summer and a chilly, damp winter on either side. This Ningbo travel guide companion breaks down each season with specific dates, weather numbers, and the events worth planning around.

Best Time to Visit Ningbo: Spring (March to May)

Late March through early May is the first prime window. Daytime highs climb from 16°C (61°F) in March to 25°C (77°F) by May, and the city’s gardens and lake paths are at their greenest, which pairs well with the outdoor stops in our things to do in Ningbo list. The catch is rainfall, which rises to 204mm in May. Avoid the Labour Day holiday (May 1 to 5), when domestic travelers flood the city and hotel rates jump; the second half of April is the sweet spot.

Best Time to Visit Ningbo: Autumn (September to November)

September 20 through mid-November is the single best stretch of the year. October averages 22°C (72°F) with only 118mm of rain, and the sky clears after the typhoon season winds down. The autumn fishing moratorium lifts around September 16, so this is also the best season to eat hairy crab and yellow croaker, timed to the Ningbo events and festivals calendar. The National Day Golden Week (October 1 to 7) brings peak crowds and prices, so book mid-October to early November instead.

Best Time to Visit Ningbo: Summer (June to August)

Summer is the season to avoid unless you have a specific reason. June brings the plum rains and 349mm of precipitation, the wettest month of the year, with humidity near 81%. July and August are drier but hotter, with highs of 32-33°C (90-91°F), and typhoon season runs from August into early October; check the Ningbo weather by month data before you commit. Families do come for the Xiangshan beaches and water parks, and a lake resort keeps the heat manageable.

Best Time to Visit Ningbo: Winter (December to February)

Winter is the cheapest and quietest season. January averages 10°C (50°F) by day and 4°C (39°F) at night, December is the driest month at 62mm, and hotel prices bottom out, which works well with the where to stay in Ningbo options. The tradeoff is gray, overcast weather with only about 102 sunshine hours in January, so winter suits food, museum, and temple trips rather than outdoor scenery.
