Ningbo spreads across six urban districts, but most visitors spend their time in three: Haishu for the historic center, Jiangbei for the Old Bund waterfront, and Yinzhou for the museum and Dongqian Lake. This Ningbo travel guide section breaks down each area by what it is known for, who it suits, and typical hotel prices. Check the Ningbo weather by month data first, since the lake and coastal districts feel a few degrees cooler in summer.

Ningbo Neighborhoods: Haishu District (City Center)

Haishu is the compact historic core, bordered by the Yuyao River to the north and containing Tianyi Pavilion, Moon Lake, the Drum Tower, the City God Temple, and the railway station. More than half of Ningbo’s visitors base themselves here because the main sights are walkable and Metro Line 1 and Line 2 cross the district. Hotel prices run from about 300 yuan a night at a business hotel to 800-plus yuan at the five-star towers around Tianyi Square; see the full rundown in the where to stay in Ningbo guide.

Ningbo Neighborhoods: Old Bund and Jiangbei District

Jiangbei District sits north of the Yao River and is anchored by the Old Bund, a 1844 treaty-port waterfront with restored colonial buildings, the Jiangbei Catholic Church, and the Ningbo Museum of Art. It is the city’s nightlife center and suits younger travelers and anyone who wants evening entertainment on their doorstep. Hotels here lean upscale, with the Ningbo Marriott on the river and limited budget stock.

Ningbo Neighborhoods: Yinzhou District and Dongqian Lake

Yinzhou is the newer commercial and residential district east and south of the rivers, home to the Ningbo Museum, the new CBD, and the lakeside resorts of Dongqian Lake. It suits business travelers and families, with the widest choice of international chain hotels and shopping malls. Expect 400 to 1,200 yuan a night for four- and five-star properties, and plan to use the metro to reach the Haishu sights in our things to do in Ningbo list. The district also hosts several newer venues on the Ningbo events and festivals calendar.

Ningbo Neighborhoods: Fenghua District (Xikou)

Fenghua is the sprawling southern district that contains Xikou, the hometown of Chiang Kai-shek, and the Xuedou Mountain scenic area with its Maitreya Buddha statue and waterfall. It is a day-trip destination rather than a base for most travelers, but a night here makes sense for an early start on the mountain. Accommodation is mostly mid-range and local, around 200 to 500 yuan a night, and the drive from central Ningbo takes about an hour.

Ningbo Neighborhoods: Beilun and Zhenhai (Port and Coast)

Beilun, to the northeast, is home to the deep-water Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, one of the busiest cargo ports in the world, plus the Jiufeng Mountain hiking trails. Zhenhai holds the Zhenhaikou coast defense fortifications. Neither is a conventional tourist base, but both offer the cheapest hotels in the region, often under 250 yuan a night. Factor in a 40-minute ride back into the center, and time coastal visits around the best time to visit Ningbo calendar, since typhoon season can close ferries in late summer.
