The best time to visit Le Mans depends on whether you want race-weekend energy or a quieter city break. June brings the 24 Hours of Le Mans but also the highest hotel prices, while May and September offer mild weather, fewer crowds and lower rates. This guide to Le Mans breaks down the year by weather, crowds and prices.

Best Time to Visit Le Mans: Best Weather

For the best weather, target June through September, when highs sit between 22°C (72°F) and 26°C (79°F) and monthly rain stays under 55 mm. July and August are the warmest and driest months, with August recording just 44 mm of rain, but they’re also the busiest for French holidaymakers. Late May and early September give you temperatures around 20 to 22°C (67 to 72°F) with lighter crowds than July. Avoid December and January if you want sunshine, since these months average only about 2 hours of sun per day and 63 to 72 mm of rain, as our Le Mans weather by month data shows.

Best Time to Visit Le Mans: The 24 Hours Race

The 24 Hours of Le Mans runs on 13 and 14 June 2026, with the race starting at 4pm on the Saturday and running through to Sunday afternoon. Race week itself spans 10 to 14 June, with free practice and qualifying from Wednesday, and the official test day on Sunday 7 June. Around 300,000 fans pack the Circuit de la Sarthe, so book accommodation in Le Mans 9 to 12 months ahead and expect hotel rates to double or triple. If you want the racing atmosphere without the peak prices, the Le Mans Classic vintage event in July, covered in our Le Mans events and festivals guide, is a cheaper alternative.

Best Time to Visit Le Mans: Fewest Crowds

The old town is quietest from November to March, when the Cité Plantagenêt‘s cobbled lanes have few visitors and you’ll often have the cathedral to yourself. October and April are the shoulder months that balance decent weather with thin crowds, with highs of 17°C (63°F) and 16°C (61°F) respectively. The single busiest stretch outside race week is mid-July to late August, when French and European tourists fill the centre.

Best Time to Visit Le Mans: Lowest Prices

Hotel prices bottom out in January and February, when a central 3-star like the ibis Le Mans Centre can drop well below its summer rate, and in November before the Christmas market begins. Expect the biggest premiums on the race weekend in June, the Le Mans Classic weekend in July, and during the December Christmas market. For a good mix of value and weather, book a weekday stay in May or late September, when mid-range doubles in the centre are typically 20 to 30 percent cheaper than in July.
