Le Mans packs most of its events into the summer, anchored by the world’s oldest active endurance race. This calendar lists the main dates for 2026, from the 24 Hours race in June to the free Nuit des Chimères light trail that runs every summer evening in the old town of Le Mans.
Le Mans Events: The 24 Hours Race (13 to 14 June 2026)
The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the headline event, held at the Circuit de la Sarthe on 13 and 14 June 2026. The race starts at 4pm on Saturday and runs non-stop through the night to Sunday afternoon, with a 62-car grid including 18 Hypercars competing in the 94th edition. Race week runs 10 to 14 June with free practice and qualifying, and the test day is Sunday 7 June. Around 300,000 fans attend, so book accommodation in Le Mans well in advance.
Le Mans Events: La Nuit des Chimères (2 July to 20 September)
La Nuit des Chimères is a free open-air light trail that illuminates the Cité Plantagenêt every evening from 2 July to 20 September 2026. Starting at the cathedral on Place du Cardinal-Grente, around 25 photographic portraits by Philippe Echaroux line the old-town lanes, while large projections play across the cathedral facade and the Gallo-Roman wall for about two hours after nightfall, roughly 10pm in July and 9pm in September. There’s no booking and no charge, and the mild summer nights, averaging 18 to 20°C in Le Mans after dark, make it comfortable.
Le Mans Events: Le Mans Classic (early July)
The Le Mans Classic is a biennial vintage race meeting at the Circuit de la Sarthe held in early July, bringing historic cars from the 1920s to the 1980s back onto the full track. It alternates years with other editions, so check the official calendar, but when it runs it draws collectors and classic-car fans for a weekend of period racing, club displays and a 1930s-style paddock. Expect hotels to be busy, though less so than on the 24 Hours race weekend, as the best time to visit Le Mans guide explains.
Le Mans Events: Music and the Abbey
The Abbaye Royale de l’Épau hosts a summer programme of concerts, including candlelight sessions by Candlelight, and the Nouveaux Mystères de la Cathédrale run on Fridays and Saturdays at 9:15pm from 17 July to 5 September, a 90-minute theatrical tour of the cathedral for ages 8 and up. Check the tourist office for the full seasonal agenda, and pair a concert with the museums and abbey visits nearby.
Le Mans Events: Christmas Market (December)
Through December, Le Mans runs a Christmas market on Place de la République with wooden chalets, mulled wine and seasonal food, usually opening in early December and closing just before Christmas. The old town adds festive lighting, and the mild December weather, averaging 8°C (47°F), makes evening walks feasible with a coat. It’s the quietest season for crowds, so it’s a good time to combine the market with exploring the Le Mans neighborhoods and a Le Mans travel tips itinerary.
