Le Mans sits on the Sarthe river in the Pays de la Loire region of western France, about 200 km southwest of Paris. The city of roughly 145,000 people is best known for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but it’s also one of France’s most complete medieval towns, with a 1,700-year-old Roman wall and an oceanic climate that stays mild all year. July averages 26°C (79°F), January averages 8°C (46°F), and rain falls in every month.
Welcome to Le Mans
The Cité Plantagenêt is where a visit starts: 20 hectares of half-timbered houses and cobbled lanes on a hill above the river, enclosed by Gallo-Roman walls that have stood since the late 3rd century AD. The Cathédrale Saint-Julien mixes a Romanesque nave with a Gothic choir, and the Musée des 24 Heures, reopened in 2026 as M24, holds 140 cars at the gates of the Circuit de la Sarthe. Beyond the sights, Le Mans is a working regional capital, so prices stay lower than in Paris or Nantes and the town is easy to cover in two or three days.
Le Mans Weather at a Glance
Le Mans has a mild oceanic climate with about 678 mm of rain and 1,700 hours of sunshine a year. Winters are cool and damp, with January highs around 8°C (46°F) and lows near 2.5°C (37°F), while snow is rare. Spring warms from 13°C (55°F) in March to 20°C (67°F) in May, and summer peaks in July and August at 26°C (79°F) with the year’s lowest rainfall, 47 mm and 44 mm. Autumn cools from 22°C (72°F) in September to 11°C (52°F) in November, and December is the wettest month with 72 mm.
The Sarthe river and the low elevation of the Loire basin keep temperature swings modest, and the Atlantic to the west brings changeable weather year-round. That means even summer days can bring a passing shower, and a cloudy morning often clears by afternoon. The full month-by-month data is in our Le Mans weather guide.
