Broome’s event calendar is built around the dry season, when the weather is cool enough for outdoor festivals and the town’s population swells from about 14,000 to over 45,000. The two anchors are the Staircase to the Moon, a monthly natural light show from March to October, and Shinju Matsuri, the ten-day Festival of the Pearl every September. Exact dates shift year to year, so confirm them against the Broome Visitor Centre calendar when you book, and pair your trip dates with the best time to visit Broome advice.

Signature Events and Festivals in Broome

Shinju Matsuri (Festival of the Pearl)

Shinju Matsuri runs for about ten days in September and is the town’s biggest event, a celebration of the pearling industry and the town’s multicultural roots. The program includes the Mardi Gras street parade down Chinatown, dragon boat races on Roebuck Bay, a float parade, art exhibitions, and the crowning of the Shinju Matsuri Princess. Most events are free, with ticketed dinners and a closing fireworks display over the bay. Book accommodation months ahead, because September is one of the busiest weeks of the year in Broome’s hotels.

Staircase to the Moon and night markets

The Staircase to the Moon appears two or three nights after each full moon from March to October, when moonlight reflects off Roebuck Bay’s exposed mudflats to create the illusion of a staircase rising from the horizon. The show lasts roughly 20 minutes around moonrise. On those evenings, the Town Beach night markets set up stalls selling food, crafts, and pearl jewellery, and the Mangrove Hotel lawn is the other prime viewing spot. It’s free to watch, and the dates are published each year by the Broome Visitor Centre. See the Broome weather by month guide for the full climate table.

Broome Cup race day

The Broome Cup, held at Broome Turf Club on Gantheaume Point Road in August, is the social highlight of the dry-season calendar, drawing fashion contests alongside the racing. It’s a dress-up event in the Australian country-race tradition, and general admission tickets are modest, with marquee packages running higher. The Cup weekend ties into a broader August racing season at the same track, so check the club’s calendar if you’re in town that month. See the things to do in Broome list for more ideas.

Seasonal Events and Festivals in Broome

Opera under the Stars (April)

Opera under the Stars brings a touring opera performance to Broome in April, staged in outdoor settings that have included the Pearl Luggers precinct. It’s a ticketed one-night event and part of a regional circuit that visits the Kimberley each autumn. Tickets sell out, so sign up for the Broome Visitor Centre newsletter if you want to catch it. See the Broome neighborhoods guide to pick your base.

Cable Beach Polo (May)

Cable Beach Polo in May turns a stretch of Cable Beach into a polo field, with matches played on the hard sand at low tide. Spectating from the beach is free, while the ticketed marquee areas include food and drinks. It’s a newer event on the calendar and one of the few that brings an international crowd to town outside the peak July-to-August window. See our full Broome travel guide for the overview.

Mango Festival (November)

The Mango Festival in November marks the start of mango season and the build-up to the wet. It’s a community market-style day with mango tastings, cooking demos, and live music, usually held in the town centre. November is hot and humid, with average highs of 34Β°C (93Β°F), so this one is for travellers who don’t mind the buildup heat. For what else to pack and expect, see our Broome travel tips page.
