Broome is a pearling town on the Kimberley coast of Western Australia, where the Indian Ocean meets the red earth of the outback. It’s a two-season destination: a long dry season from May to October with clear skies and low humidity, and a hot, wet season from November to April that brings monsoonal rain and the chance of cyclones. Daytime highs sit between 29°C (84°F) and 34°C (93°F) all year, and the town’s 22km Cable Beach, the Staircase to the Moon, and a 130-million-year-old dinosaur trackway are the main reasons travellers make the long trip. This guide covers the climate, the best time to go, and where to stay, with links to our seven detailed guides below.
Broome Weather at a Glance
Broome has a tropical savanna climate, with average annual rainfall of about 615mm falling almost entirely between November and April. The dry season from May to October is the famous Broome you see in photos: blue skies, afternoon temperatures around 29°C to 32°C (84°F to 90°F), and overnight lows that drop to a comfortable 14°C to 18°C (57°F to 64°F) by June and July. The wet season is the opposite, with January averaging 182mm of rain, humidity sitting above 70 percent, and sticky overnight lows of 26°C (79°F) that make sleep hard without air conditioning. Sea temperatures off Cable Beach stay between 24°C (75°F) in July and 30°C (86°F) in February, so the ocean is swimmable all year, though jellyfish restrictions apply from November to April.
