Broome has a tropical savanna climate with two seasons and no winter to speak of. The town sits at 17.96°S on Western Australia’s Kimberley coast, where daytime highs stay between 29°C (84°F) and 34°C (93°F) all year. What changes is the rain: roughly 615mm falls annually, but almost all of it arrives between November and April. The dry season from May to October brings clear skies, low humidity, and cool nights, while the wet season brings monsoonal downpours, high humidity, and the chance of tropical cyclones. This best time to visit Broome guide breaks the seasons down month by month. See the Broome neighborhoods guide to pick your base.
Broome Weather by Month: The Dry Season (May to October)
The dry season is Broome’s peak period for a reason. May opens with highs around 32°C (90°F) and the humidity drops off sharply as the first southeast trade winds arrive. By June, nights cool to 15°C (59°F) and you can sleep without air conditioning. July is the coolest month with an average low of 14°C (57°F) and daytime highs of 29°C (84°F). Rain is nearly absent: June averages 8mm, July 6mm, and August just 2mm. August through October see the famous Staircase to the Moon, when the full moon reflects off Roebuck Bay’s exposed mudflats. October heats back up to 34°C (93°F) highs and the humidity starts creeping back before the first storms arrive. See the things to do in Broome list for more ideas. See the where to stay in Broome guide for hotels in each area.
Broome Weather by Month: The Wet Season (November to April)
The wet season, known locally as the buildup and the wet, runs from November to April. November and December are the hottest months of the year with average highs of 34°C (93°F) and sticky overnight lows near 27°C (81°F). The first monsoon rains usually arrive in December, which averages 59mm. January is the wettest month at 182mm, followed by February at 156mm and March at 100mm. Rain falls as short, intense afternoon storms rather than all-day drizzle, so you can still get beach time most mornings. Cyclone season runs from November to April, and Tropical Cyclone Rosita crossed directly over Broome in April 2000 with gusts over 200km/h. Swimming is restricted in these months because of irukandji jellyfish, so most people stick to resort pools or patrolled beaches with stinger nets.
