Nancy sits in the Grand Est region of Lorraine in northeastern France, about 125 km (78 miles) from the German border at an elevation of roughly 210 metres. The climate is oceanic (Koppen Cfb): cool winters, mild summers and rain spread evenly all year. The annual average temperature is 10.6°C (51°F), annual rainfall is about 897 mm (35 in), and the city gets around 1,684 hours of sunshine a year. There is no dry season and no extreme heat, so expect cloud and the odd shower in any month. Plan sightseeing with our things to do in Nancy guide
Nancy Weather by Month: Winter, December to February
January is the coldest month, averaging 2.7°C (37°F) with daytime highs around 5°C (41°F) and nights close to 0°C (32°F). Frost is frequent, and snow falls on roughly 20 to 25 days each winter, though it rarely settles for more than a day or two in the city centre. December is the wettest month at about 95 mm (3.7 in). Cold air funnels in along the neighbouring Vosges range, so a raw day can feel several degrees below the thermometer reading. Pack a warm coat, hat, gloves and waterproof shoes. The Nancy events and festivals calendar lists the Saint Nicolas parade
Nancy Weather by Month: Spring, March to May
March averages about 7°C (45°F), rising to 10°C (50°F) in April and 14°C (57°F) in May. April is the driest month at roughly 67 mm (2.6 in), which makes late April and early May the best stretch for walking the UNESCO squares without heavy rain gear. Frost mostly disappears by late April, and the flowerbeds of Place Stanislas plus the plane trees in the Pepiniere come into leaf through May. Mornings stay cold in March, and showers remain common all spring, so layers are the right call. Our Nancy neighborhoods guide breaks down the districts
Nancy Weather by Month: Summer, June to August
July is the warmest month at an average of 20.0°C (68°F) with daytime highs around 25°C (77°F). The hottest days top out near 31°C (88°F), and heatwaves are short-lived. Rain stays steady at 70 to 80 mm a month, usually as quick afternoon showers or thunderstorms. July and August each deliver about 220 hours of sunshine, the brightest part of the year. With no coastal breeze, still afternoons in the old stone centre can feel sticky, though most hotels and restaurants are air-conditioned. For hotels by area, see where to stay in Nancy
Nancy Weather by Month: Autumn, September to November
September holds mild at around 16°C (61°F), then temperatures fall to 10°C (50°F) in October and 6°C (43°F) in November. Rainfall climbs back toward 80 to 90 mm a month and the first frosts of the season arrive in November. The lime and chestnut trees of the Pepiniere turn colour through October, one of the prettiest times to photograph the city. Daylight shortens fast, and by late November the sun sets before 5 pm.
