Curitiba has a subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cfb) with mild temperatures year-round and no extreme heat. At 934 meters (3,064 feet) above sea level, it’s one of the coldest state capitals in Brazil. The average annual temperature is 17.2°C (63°F), with January and February being the warmest months at around 21°C (70°F) and July the coolest at 13.5°C (56°F). Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year, averaging 1,420mm (56 inches) annually, with January typically the wettest month. January in Curitiba

January is the warmest month with an average high of 26°C (79°F) and low of 17°C (63°F). It’s also the wettest month, receiving about 170mm (6.7 inches) of rain across 18 rainy days. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, typically building up by mid-afternoon and clearing by evening. Humidity averages 80%, making it feel muggier than the temperature suggests. Pack a light rain jacket and umbrella if visiting in January.

February in Curitiba

February is nearly identical to January, with highs of 26°C (79°F) and lows of 17°C (63°F). Rainfall drops slightly to about 150mm (5.9 inches). Carnival often falls in February, and while Curitiba doesn’t have the massive street parties of Rio or Salvador, there are blocos and concerts throughout the city. UV levels are high (10-12), so sunscreen is essential even on overcast days.

March in Curitiba

March marks the beginning of autumn with temperatures starting to cool. Average highs drop to 25°C (77°F) and lows to 16°C (61°F). Rainfall remains steady at about 130mm (5.1 inches). The weather becomes less humid and more comfortable for outdoor activities. The Graciosa Road (Estrada da Graciosa) drive to the coast is especially scenic in March as the Atlantic Forest begins its subtle seasonal color shift.

April in Curitiba

April brings noticeably cooler weather with highs of 23°C (73°F) and lows of 14°C (57°F). Rainfall drops to about 95mm (3.7 inches), making it one of the drier months. The famous jacaranda trees around the city begin blooming with purple flowers. Evenings require a light jacket or sweater. This is a favorite month for locals who enjoy the crisp autumn air.

May in Curitiba

May is when Curitiba’s weather turns distinctly cool. Highs reach only 20°C (68°F) and lows drop to 10°C (50°F). Rainfall is moderate at about 100mm (3.9 inches). The first frosts of the year typically appear in late May in the suburbs. Indoor attractions like the Oscar Niemeyer Museum and Mercado Municipal become more appealing. Pack layers: a warm sweater and a waterproof outer layer.

June in Curitiba

June is the start of winter with average highs of 19°C (66°F) and lows of 8°C (46°F). Frost is common, especially in the southern suburbs and higher elevation areas. Rainfall is about 110mm (4.3 inches). Daylight hours are at their shortest (about 10.5 hours). This is the driest-feeling month despite moderate rain totals because cold air holds less moisture. A warm coat, scarf, and gloves are recommended for early mornings and evenings.

July in Curitiba

July is the coldest month with average highs of 19°C (66°F) and lows of 8°C (46°F). Some mornings dip to 2-3°C (36-37°F) in the city center and below freezing in the suburbs. Rainfall is about 100mm (3.9 inches). This is peak season for the Serra do Mar train ride to Morretes, as the cool clear days offer the best mountain views. The Curitiba Theater Festival runs in July, bringing indoor cultural events. Dress in warm layers with a heavy coat for mornings.

August in Curitiba

August remains cool with highs around 21°C (70°F) and lows of 9°C (48°F). Frost still occurs early in the month but becomes less frequent. Rainfall is the lowest of the year at about 75mm (3 inches). This is one of the best months for clear-sky photography and outdoor sightseeing. The wind can be strong, so a windbreaker is useful. Days are noticeably longer than June/July.

September in Curitiba

September is spring, with highs of 22°C (72°F) and lows of 11°C (52°F). Rainfall increases to about 130mm (5.1 inches). The city’s parks and gardens come alive with spring blooms, especially at the Botanical Garden. Temperature swings can be dramatic: a 25°C (77°F) afternoon can drop to 8°C (46°F) by night. Pack for both warm days and cool evenings. September can be windy, with occasional strong gusts.

October in Curitiba

October brings warmer weather with highs of 23°C (73°F) and lows of 13°C (55°F). Rainfall is moderate at about 130mm (5.1 inches). This is a transitional month with a mix of cool and warm days. The ipê trees (yellow and pink varieties) put on their spectacular annual bloom, turning entire streets into tunnels of color. It’s one of the prettiest months for photography.

November in Curitiba

November sees continuing warming with highs of 25°C (77°F) and lows of 14°C (57°F). Rainfall increases to about 130mm (5.1 inches). Thunderstorms become more frequent in the afternoons. December in Curitiba

December is summer and the second-warmest month with highs of 26°C (79°F) and lows of 16°C (61°F). Rainfall is about 150mm (5.9 inches). The city decorates extensively for Christmas, with the main event being the Christmas Choir at the Wire Opera House. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, but mornings are typically sunny. UV levels are high despite frequent cloud cover.
