The historic and administrative core. Centro covers the pedestrianized Rua XV de Novembro (Rua das Flores), Praça Tiradentes (the city’s ground zero), and the shopping streets around Praça Osório. Centro Cívico, directly north, is the government district with Niemeyer-designed state buildings from the 1950s. The neighborhood lacks the dining scene of Batel or Santa Felicidade but has several good churrascarias and casual restaurants on Avenida Comendador Franco. Hotel rates run R$180-350/night. Jardim Botânico suits families and travelers who want park access and don’t mind using Uber to reach restaurants at night.

The Italian neighborhood, 8km northwest of Centro. Santa Felicidade is primarily a dining destination with Avenida Manoel Ribas lined with large Italian restaurants operating for decades. It’s not a base neighborhood for most tourists because it’s far from other attractions and lacks hotel options, but it’s worth a dedicated lunch or dinner trip.
