Freiburg packs an impressive number of attractions into its compact medieval Altstadt and the surrounding Black Forest foothills. Freiburg Münster (Cathedral)
The Freiburg Münster (Münsterplatz, open Mon-Sat 10:00-17:00, Sun 13:00-17:00, tower closed Sundays and in bad weather) is one of Germany’s finest Gothic cathedrals, begun in 1200 and completed in 1513. The 116-metre west tower (admission 5 euros, 2 euros reduced) requires climbing 333 steps but delivers a panoramic view of the city, the Black Forest, and on clear days the Vosges Mountains in France. The tower survived the November 1944 bombing that destroyed most of the Altstadt , a fact locals attribute to divine protection. Inside, the high altar triptych by Hans Baldung Grien (1516) and the 13th-century stained glass windows are highlights. Allow 90 minutes total.
The Bächle (Little Streams)
Freiburg’s most distinctive feature is its network of small open water channels , the Bächle , running through nearly every street in the Altstadt. Originally built in the 13th century for firefighting and livestock watering, today they provide natural air conditioning on summer days (children splash toy boats in them and adults dangle their feet). Local legend says that if you accidentally step in one, you’ll marry a Freiburger. The water is clean mountain runoff from the Dreisam River. Walk along Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse and the side alleys off Münsterplatz to see the best examples.
Schlossberg (Castle Hill)
The Schlossberg rises 120 metres above the Altstadt just east of Schwabentor (Swabian Gate). A footpath and the Schlossbergbahn funicular (2.80 euros one way, operates 09:00-19:00 daily April-October) take you to the top in under 10 minutes. At the summit you’ll find the remains of a 17th-century fortress demolished by French troops in 1744, a beer garden (Schlossbergrestaurant Dattler, open Tue-Sun 10:00-23:00 in summer), and a 360-degree viewing platform. The walk up takes about 20 minutes via the serpentine path starting behind Schwabentor. Free entry, open 24/7.

Augustiner Museum
Housed in a former Augustinian monastery (Augustinerplatz, Tue-Sun 10:00-17:00, admission 8 euros / 6 euros reduced, under 18 free), the Augustiner Museum holds one of Germany’s best collections of medieval religious art. The standout pieces are the original stone figures from the Münster’s west portal (circa 1300), moved indoors for preservation, and a collection of Upper Rhine Gothic stained glass. Haus der Badischen Weine (Baden Wine House)
Baden is Germany’s third-largest wine region and Freiburg sits at its heart. The Haus der Badischen Weine (Kaiser-Joseph-Str. 283, Mon-Sat 10:00-19:00) offers tastings of 200+ Baden wines by the glass starting at 2 euros. Schwabentor and Martinstor (City Gates)
Two of Freiburg’s original five medieval city gates survive. The Schwabentor (Swabian Gate, Obere Linden 1) dates to 1250 and houses a small diorama museum (Zinnfigurenklause, admission 2 euros) with tin-figure displays of local history. The Martinstor (Martin’s Gate, Kaiser-Joseph-Str.) is older, dating to 1202, and is now embedded in a row of shops with a McDonald’s on its ground floor , a somewhat jarring juxtaposition. Schauinsland Cable Car and Mountain
The Schauinslandbahn (12 km south of Freiburg, bus 21 from the main station, 35 minutes) is Germany’s longest loop cable car at 3.6 km, climbing to 1,284 m in about 15 minutes. Round-trip tickets cost 13.50 euros (9.50 euros reduced, family ticket 33 euros). At the top you’ll find a viewing tower (free), a restaurant (Bergstation Schauinsland), hiking trails, and on exceptionally clear days a view of the Alps from Mont Blanc to the Zugspitze. Kaiserstuhl Wine Region
The Kaiserstuhl (Emperor’s Chair) is a small volcanic mountain range 15 km west of Freiburg that produces some of Germany’s best red wines, particularly Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris). The terraced vineyards and hilltop villages like Burkheim and Ihringen (Germany’s warmest village) are best explored by bicycle , rent one at Freiburg Hauptbahnhof (Radstation, from 10 euros/day) and follow the 60 km Kaiserstuhl-Radwanderweg loop. Feldberg and Black Forest Hiking
The Feldberg (1,493 m), the Black Forest’s highest peak, lies 35 km southeast of Freiburg (train to Feldberg-Bärental station then bus 7300, about 60 minutes total). Summer activities include the 12 km Feldberg-Steig panoramic trail (allow 4 hours, moderate difficulty) and the Feldsee, a glacial cirque lake at 1,109 m with water temperatures reaching 14°C (57°F) in August.
