Most visitors arrive at Whitsunday Coast Airport near Proserpine and shuttle 30 to 40 minutes into Airlie Beach, the town where nearly every reef and sailing tour departs. From here the choice is simple: stay on the mainland and take day trips out to the reef and Whitehaven Beach, or catch a ferry to Hamilton Island and stay out on the water. Whichever you pick, the shape of the trip is the same, reef in the morning, beach in the afternoon, and a cold drink on a deck by evening.

Where the Whitsundays Are and What Shapes the Climate
The Whitsundays sit at about 20 degrees south latitude, roughly 1,100 km north of Brisbane, inside the sheltered waters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The reef to seaward calms the swell, which is what makes the sailing and the shallow beach water so gentle, and the south-east trade winds that blow from May to October keep the dry season mild. The islands are mostly national park, so the coastline stays undeveloped apart from the resort islands.
