Whitsundays Neighborhoods: Airlie Beach
Airlie Beach is the mainland gateway and the busiest town, built around a main street of hostels, tour desks, bars and restaurants that backs onto the free Airlie Beach Lagoon. It is where nearly all reef and sailing tours depart, from either Coral Sea Marina or Port of Airlie. It suits backpackers, groups and first-time visitors who want to walk to tours and nightlife, with hotel rooms from about A$150 a night and hostel dorms from A$35. Whitsundays Neighborhoods: Cannonvale
Cannonvale is the quieter residential neighbour 3 to 5 km west of Airlie Beach, centred on a shopping centre with a Woolworths supermarket. Accommodation here leans to apartment resorts and family holiday parks, and prices run 20 to 30 percent below Airlie Beach for the same standard. It suits families and longer stays who have a car or are happy with a short shuttle to the marina. Whitsundays Neighborhoods: Hamilton Island
Hamilton Island is the largest inhabited island and the only one with its own commercial airport (Great Barrier Reef Airport, code HTI). It has a golf course on Dent Island, a wildlife park, several restaurants, a marina and a small supermarket, with buggies as the main transport. It suits families and couples who want a self-contained resort with everything on one island, but rooms start high, often A$350 and up a night. Whitsundays Neighborhoods: Daydream, Long and Hayman Islands
Daydream Island and Long Island run all-inclusive style resorts reached by ferry, while Hayman Island is the luxury private-island resort at the top of the range. These suit travellers who want to stay on the water with little need to go anywhere else. Whitsundays Neighborhoods: Whitehaven Beach and the National Park Islands
Whitsunday Island itself has no hotels, only national park campsites (permit required) and a few eco-resorts dotted on other islands. If you want to wake up near Whitehaven Beach, look at the small lodges and camping options on the national park islands, or book a liveaboard sailing boat.
