The Whitsundays events calendar clusters around August, when three major events run back to back, and November, when the music festival takes over Airlie Beach. Whitsundays Events in August: Festivals and Race Weeks
Great Barrier Reef Festival (31 July to 2 August 2026)
Held on the Airlie Beach foreshore, this three-day festival mixes live music, a street parade, food stalls, a sand-sculpting competition and family activities. Entry to the foreshore events is free, with ticketed concerts in the evenings. Airlie Beach Race Week (6 to 13 August 2026)
A week of sailing regattas out of Coral Sea Marina, with race starts visible from the Airlie Beach shoreline each afternoon. The fleet is a mix of serious racing yachts and cruising boats, and the marina hosts nightly parties and prize presentations. Shore-side events are free to attend, and August’s steady trade winds make this the driest stretch of the Whitsundays weather year.
Hamilton Island Race Week (15 to 22 August 2026)
One of Australia’s largest offshore yachting regattas, drawing around 180 boats to the waters around Hamilton Island. Races start from the island each day, with the finish line off the marina. The island puts on live music, food stalls and entertainment in the marina precinct each night, and ferry services from Airlie Beach run extra sailings. Whitsundays Events in November: Music and Markets
Airlie Beach Festival of Music (6 to 8 November 2026)
A three-day festival with around 100 artists playing across multiple venues in Airlie Beach, from the main stage at the Whitsunday Sailing Club to pub and street stages. Lions Airlie Beach Community Markets (Every Saturday)
A weekly market on the Airlie Beach foreshore every Saturday morning, selling local produce, crafts, clothing and food. It runs from about 8:00am to 1:00pm and is a reliable place to buy tropical fruit, handmade jewellery and souvenirs without the resort markup.
Whitsundays Events: Seasonal and Holiday Periods
New Year’s Eve in Airlie Beach (31 December)
Airlie Beach runs a foreshore fireworks display over the water on New Year’s Eve, with the lagoon and the main street packed from late afternoon. Restaurants and bars take bookings weeks ahead, and it is the busiest single night of the year in town.
