Bonito is a town of 22,000 people in the southern Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, 300 km southwest of Campo Grande. Its name means beautiful in Portuguese, and it earns it through clear rivers, caves and waterfalls that make it Brazil’s top ecotourism destination. The climate is tropical with a wet summer from October to March and a dry winter from April to September that produces more than 30 meters of underwater visibility.

Welcome to Bonito

Bonito has no coastline, and the nearest beach is over 1,000 km away. The draw is fresh water: the Rio da Prata, the Rio Sucuri and dozens of limestone caves and waterfalls on private farms. Everything runs on a tour-voucher system, so you book each attraction through one of the town’s 40-plus agencies before you go, and the agency arranges the transport.

Bonito Weather at a Glance

Temperatures stay warm all year but swing more than most tropical places. January averages 26.2°C (79.2°F) and July 19.7°C (67.4°F), with dry-season nights down to 15°C (59°F). Rainfall is the bigger story: December gets 235 mm against 54 mm in July, and that gap is what turns the rivers from murky to crystal clear.

The wet season (October to March) brings afternoon thunderstorms, full waterfalls and high rivers. The dry season (April to September) brings clear skies, cooler nights and the calm, transparent water that makes the flutuação floats famous. See the Bonito weather by month page for the complete monthly table.

  • Winter (June to August): dry and cool at night, 30-plus meters of visibility, the July Festival de Inverno crowds.

Where Bonito Is and What Shapes Its Climate

Bonito sits at 315 meters above sea level on the southern edge of the Pantanal wetlands, in the Serra da Bodoquena region. Its limestone plateau filters rainwater through rock before it resurfaces as the clear springs that feed the rivers, which is why visibility is so high in the dry season. The nearest large city, Campo Grande, is 300 km northeast and is the main flight gateway.
