Things to Do in Bonito: Snorkeling and River Floats

Rio da Prata (flutuação)

The Recanto Ecológico Rio da Prata, 56 km from town, runs the longest float in the region. You walk about 40 minutes through forest to the spring, then drift 2 km downstream over white sand and rock ledges. Lunch is included and the tour lasts about 4 hours. Cost is R$ 360 in low season and R$ 475 in high season.

Rio Sucuri (flutuação)

The Sucuri is often called the clearest river in Brazil, fed by a spring at Fazenda São Geraldo 18 km from town. The float is shorter and calmer than the Prata and suits first-timers. Rates are R$ 220 in low season and R$ 348 in high season, and a boat ride to the starting point is part of the tour.

Nascente Azul

This complex 29 km from town combines a river float with a day-use area, zipline and stand-up paddle. The float plus day use costs R$ 290 in low season and R$ 360 in high season, and includes a locker and wetsuit.

Lagoa Misteriosa

A 220-meter-deep flooded sinkhole near Jardim, 55 km from town, where you snorkel or scuba over blue water of 40-plus meters visibility. Snorkeling costs R$ 232 in low season and R$ 250 in high season; scuba costs more and requires a certification check.

Things to Do in Bonito: Caves and Sinkholes

Gruta do Lago Azul

Bonito’s most famous cave holds an intense blue underground lake 70 meters deep. The guided visit descends a 280-step staircase and lasts about 1 hour 20 minutes. It is 20 km from town, open daily 7:00 to 14:00, and costs R$ 100 in low season and R$ 160 in high season. Closed shoes are mandatory.

Abismo Anhumas

A rappel of 72 meters drops you into a cave lake you explore by snorkel or scuba, 23 km from town. It is the most expensive tour at roughly R$ 800 to R$ 1,200 depending on the activity, and daily places are limited to a few dozen, so book several days ahead.

Buraco das Araras

A 100-meter-deep sandstone sinkhole near Jardim where red-and-green macaws nest and wheel overhead at dusk. A flat 1 km trail circles the rim. Entry is about R$ 105 and the visit takes 1 to 2 hours.

Grutas de São Miguel

Two dry caves with stalactites and walkways, 20 km from town and easy to combine with the Gruta do Lago Azul. Entry is R$ 82 in low season and R$ 118 in high season.

Things to Do in Bonito: Waterfalls and Trails

Boca da Onça

A 4 km trail passes eight waterfalls and ends at the 156-meter Boca da Onça, the highest in Mato Grosso do Sul, 55 km from town. Allow a full half day and bring your swimwear for the natural pools. Entry is around R$ 300.

Balneário Municipal

The only attraction inside the town itself, on the Formoso River with swimming areas, a fish spa and snack bars. Open daily from 8:00, entry is roughly R$ 50 to R$ 70, and it is the cheapest way to swim in clear water without leaving Bonito. The Bonito neighborhoods guide shows what else is within walking distance.

Aquário Natural

A spring-fed snorkeling pool 7 km from town with resident fish and a short trail. Good for families and anyone nervous about a long river float. Entry is about R$ 180.
