Ningbo is a port city of about 9.4 million people on China’s East Sea coast, in the northeast corner of Zhejiang province. It combines Asia’s oldest surviving private library, a riverside Bund that predates Shanghai’s, and a Pritzker-winning museum with a seafood culture built on daily catches from the East China Sea. The climate is humid subtropical: hot, wet summers with June plum rains and late-summer typhoons, and mild, dry autumns that are the best time to visit.
Welcome to Ningbo
Ningbo has been a trading port for over a millennium, and the Ningbo-Zhoushan port at Beilun is now one of the busiest cargo ports on earth. That maritime history shaped the city you see today: the Old Bund’s colonial warehouses, the Tianyi Pavilion library founded by a Ming official in 1561, and a cuisine built on yellow croaker, hairy crab, and the tangyuan rice balls Ningbo made famous. Most of the headline sights sit within a compact walkable center in Haishu District, with Dongqian Lake and Xikou an easy hour’s trip out.

Humidity averages 76% and tops 81% in June, so summer heat feels heavier than the thermometer suggests.

Location and Getting Around
Ningbo sits 150km south of Shanghai across Hangzhou Bay and about 160km east of Hangzhou. Ningbo Lishe International Airport (NGB) is 16km from the center and connected by Metro Line 2 in about 25 minutes, while high-speed rail reaches Shanghai Hongqiao in roughly two hours and Hangzhou East in about an hour. The nine-line metro makes the city easy to navigate without a car, and most visitors pair Ningbo with a Shanghai or Hangzhou stop on the same trip.
