Where to Go in February: 13 Destinations by Weather

February splits the planet into two travel seasons at once. Calangute in Goa averages a high of 31°C (88°F) in the same month that Harbin averages -20.8°C (-5°F) at night, and both are worth the trip for different reasons. The 13 destinations below are grouped by the weather you will actually get, with February temperatures and rainfall pulled from each city’s month-by-month climate guide.

Warm and Sunny in February

  • Calangute in Goa averages a high of 31°C (88°F) and a low of 21°C (70°F) with just 1mm of rain and 10 sunshine hours a day. February is mid dry season on Goa’s coast, so the beach stays clear and the days stay reliably hot.
  • Chiang Mai runs a high of 32°C (90°F) and a low of 16°C (60°F) with 5mm of rain on 1 wet day and 10 sunshine hours. Humidity sits at 55 percent, the tail of the cool, dry season before the March and April heat arrives.
  • Cape Town is in its dry summer with February the hottest month at 26°C (79°F) highs and rain that often skips weeks at a time. The sea holds about 18°C (64°F), and the southeasterly Cape Doctor wind clears the air but can make beach afternoons blustery.
  • Cancún runs 27 to 29°C (81 to 84°F) by day and 20 to 22°C (68 to 72°F) at night with low rain and moderate humidity. Calm sea conditions make February one of the best months for the boat ride to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel, and underwater visibility is at its yearly best.
  • Dubai reaches 25°C (77°F) by day and 15°C (59°F) at night, the tail end of its winter peak season. February averages 35mm of rain, more than January’s 10mm, but it falls as short downpours that clear within hours and the sun still averages 8 hours a day.
  • Rio de Janeiro is in peak summer with February the warmest month at a 27°C (81°F) average high and a sea temperature of 26°C (79°F). Carnival’s Special Group parades run 7 to 9 February 2027 at the Sambadrome, so hotel rates and flight prices spike around those nights.

Mild and Manageable

  • Marrakech averages a high of 20°C (68°F) with 38mm of rain and 215 sunshine hours across the month, at 60 percent humidity. Days suit the medina and the Majorelle Garden, and February is comfortably ahead of the 37°C (99°F) highs of July and August.
  • Valencia averages 17°C (63°F) by day and 8°C (46°F) at night with 36mm of rain and 171 sunshine hours. The Mediterranean sits at 13°C (55°F), so it is a city-break month rather than a beach month, a few weeks before the Las Fallas rush in mid-March.
  • Tokyo holds 10°C (50°F) highs and 3°C (37°F) lows with about 61mm of rain over 6 wet days. February is plum-blossom season at shrines like Yushima Tenjin, with far fewer crowds than the late-March and April cherry-blossom peak.
  • Mexico City sits at 2,250 metres (7,380 feet), so February days run 22 to 27°C (72 to 81°F) with cool nights of 7 to 13°C (45 to 55°F). February is firmly inside the November to April dry season, though the high altitude can trap smog and cause mild altitude sickness for the first day or two.

Cold and Worth It

  • Sapporo averages a high of 0°C (32°F) and a low of -7°C (19°F) with 137cm of snowfall across the month. The Sapporo Snow Festival runs 4 to 11 February 2027 at Odori Park, Susukino and Tsudome, which pushes hotel prices to their yearly peak.
  • Harbin averages -7.6°C (18°F) by day and -20.8°C (-5°F) at night, with just 4.4mm of precipitation over 4.5 days and 180 hours of sunshine. The Harbin Ice and Snow Festival runs from 5 January through most of February, typically ending around the 25th.
  • Quebec City averages -4.5°C (24°F) by day and -14.2°C (6°F) at night, one of its coldest months. The Carnaval de Québec, the world’s largest winter carnival, runs 5 to 14 February 2027 with its ice palace, night parades and the Bonhomme mascot.

When to Book

  • Rio Carnival (7 to 9 February), the Sapporo Snow Festival (4 to 11 February) and the Carnaval de Québec (5 to 14 February) all sell out hotels months ahead, so book flights and rooms before the end of the previous year.
  • Cancún, Cape Town and Dubai are high season in February without a single hard sellout event, so two to eight weeks of lead time is usually enough.
  • Valencia and Tokyo sit just ahead of their spring peaks (Las Fallas in mid-March, cherry blossoms from late March), so February rooms cost less than they will six weeks later.
