Sapporo, Hokkaido’s capital of 2 million, is defined by its climate: 597cm (19.6 feet) of annual snowfall, winter temperatures down to -7°C (19°F), and brief, mild summers peaking at 27°C (81°F) in August. The city’s grid layout, underground walkway network, and world-famous Snow Festival make it one of Japan’s most visitor-friendly winter destinations.

Welcome to Sapporo

Sapporo was built from scratch in the 1870s on an American-style grid by the Meiji government’s Hokkaido Development Commission. That planned order survives in the city’s logical address system (Kita 3-jo Nishi 5 = North 3, West 5) and the 1.5km green axis of Odori Park dividing north from south. The city feels distinct from Honshu: wider streets, more space, less density, and an identity shaped by snow. In February, 2 million people come for the Snow Festival’s massive sculptures. In July, the city is an 18°C to 25°C (64°F to 77°F) green respite from Tokyo’s humidity. The food scene, led by miso ramen, soup curry, and fresh Hokkaido seafood, justifies a visit in any season. Start with the Sapporo weather by month guide for detailed climate data.

Snowfall totals 597cm annually, with January the snowiest month at 173cm. Spring (March to May) is a rapid thaw with temperatures climbing from 4°C (39°F) in March to 18°C (64°F) in May.
