Kuşadası is a resort town and cruise port on Turkey’s Aegean coast, about 80km south of İzmir, best known as the gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus. The town gets around 300 days of sunshine a year, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, and its harbor, beaches, and nightlife make it one of the most visited destinations on the Turkish coast.

Welcome to Kuşadası

Most travelers pass through Kuşadası on a cruise ship and see only the bazaar before their bus leaves for Ephesus. Stay a few nights and you get a different town: a working harbor with a causeway castle on Pigeon Island, a beach strip that runs south toward a national park, and a center that shifts between quiet mornings and lively evenings on Bar Street. The town’s name means “Bird Island,” a reference to the pigeons that once nested on the island fort, and the castle there remains the symbol of the place.

The practical appeal is straightforward. Kuşadası is one of the most affordable bases on the Aegean, with a dense strip of mid-range and all-inclusive hotels, and it sits within 30 minutes of Ephesus, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Mediterranean. Summer days run hot, with July and August highs of 34°C (93°F), but the afternoon sea breeze keeps the coast comfortable, and the sea warms to 25°C (77°F) by August.

Kuşadası Weather at a Glance

Kuşadası has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Summers are long, hot, and nearly rainless, with just 5mm of rain in July and August and highs around 34°C (93°F). Winters are mild and wet, with January the coldest and wettest month at 13°C (55°F) and about 145mm of rain. Spring and autumn sit in between: May averages 26°C (79°F) with 30mm of rain, and September averages 30°C (86°F) with the sea still warm at 24°C (75°F). The full monthly data is in the weather-by-month guide.

Sea temperatures lag the air by a couple of months, so the water is warmest in August and September, at 24°C to 25°C (75°F to 77°F), and coolest in February and March at 15°C (59°F). For most swimmers the beach season runs from June through early October. The meltemi wind blows most afternoons in July and August, which makes the heat feel milder and keeps the air clear.

Kuşadası Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): warming days, green countryside, and thin crowds, ideal for sightseeing at Ephesus before the heat arrives.
  • Summer (June to August): hot, dry beach weather with a 24°C to 25°C sea, peak prices, and the busiest cruise months.
  • Autumn (September to November): warm sea and lower prices in September and October, the best months for swimming and hiking.
  • Winter (December to February): mild but wet, with highs of 13°C to 15°C and many beach hotels closed, but Ephesus almost empty.
