Pattaya Beach
Pattaya’s central 4-kilometre crescent runs parallel to Beach Road with the city’s full infrastructure of hotels, restaurants, bars, and shopping malls directly behind it. The beach is divided by two piers (Bali Hai at the south, Pattaya Pier in the centre) into three sections. The north section near the Dusit Thani is the quietest and cleanest for swimming.
The central section faces Central Festival mall and is the most crowded with jet skis, banana boats, and beach-chair vendors (deck chairs rent at 40 to 100 THB per day). The south section near Walking Street is the busiest and has the most variable water quality due to runoff from the Pattaya Klang canal.
The sand is coarse golden with a moderate slope into the water. Water quality tests by the Pattaya City Municipality show bacterial levels ranging from acceptable (category A) during the dry season to occasionally unsafe (category C) after heavy rain. Check the weekly water quality report before swimming. The beach promenade the full length makes it Pattaya’s best sunset-walking route.
Jomtien Beach
Pattaya’s second city beach runs 6 kilometres south from the Pratumnak headland with a wider sand area than Pattaya Beach and a more residential, family-oriented atmosphere. The central section near Jomtien Complex has restaurants, convenience stores, and the Jomtien Night Market (daily 17:00 to 22:00).
Water quality is generally better than central Pattaya Beach due to fewer drainage outlets and better tidal flushing. Water sports concentrate at the south end with windsurfing and kitesurfing operations; the Amara Watersports Club offers windsurfing lessons at 1,500 THB for 2 hours.
Jomtien Beach Road has a dedicated cycling lane on weekends. Deck chair rentals run 40 THB per day. Suits families, long-stay snowbirds (a large Russian and Scandinavian expat community lives here), and anyone prioritising a swimmable beach over central Pattaya’s nightlife action.
Wong Amat Beach
A 1-kilometre strip at Pattaya’s north end, backed by luxury condominiums and the Centara Grand Mirage resort. Wong Amat has the best mainland water quality in Pattaya Bay thanks to its position at the northern edge where tidal flushing is strongest. The sand is finer and paler than central Pattaya Beach, and the beach is less crowded year round.
Access is through the Centara Grand’s public walkway (the beach is public by Thai law) or from Soi 16 Naklua. A handful of small Thai restaurants serve grilled seafood at the Naklua end. Suits swimmers who refuse to compromise on water quality, couples at the luxury end, and anyone who wants a Pattaya beach that feels like a resort beach rather than a city beach.
Best Beaches in Pattaya: Koh Larn (Coral Island)
Tawaen Beach
Koh Larn’s most developed beach, a 750-metre arc of white sand with clear turquoise water and a row of 30-plus seafood restaurants, souvenir shops, and jet-ski rental operators. The ferry from Bali Hai Pier takes 45 minutes (30 THB one way, departures every 1 to 2 hours from 7:00 to 17:00) or 15 minutes by speedboat (200 to 300 THB one way).
Tawaen gets crowded from 10:30 to 15:00 with day-tripper groups;
arrive on the 8:00 ferry for the quietest window. Snorkelling is mediocre (most coral was damaged by boat traffic) but the water is the clearest in the Pattaya area, and the beach has proper facilities: showers (20 THB), toilets, and lockers. The last ferry back to Pattaya departs at 17:00; check the schedule at the pier on arrival as it changes seasonally. A motorbike taxi from Tawaen to Samae Beach on the other side of the island costs 100 THB per person.
Samae Beach
Koh Larn’s best beach for swimming: a 600-metre west-facing crescent with the island’s softest sand and calmest water, less crowded than Tawaen due to fewer restaurants and facilities. Two small restaurants serve pad thai and fresh coconut at island prices (100-200 THB per dish).
The beach is a 10-minute motorbike taxi from Tawaen Pier (100 THB) or a 20-minute walk. No jet skis or banana boats make Samae the quietest option on Koh Larn. Sun loungers rent at 50 THB. The last boat back leaves at 17:00; plan your return carefully. Samae’s sunset view is the best on Koh Larn as it faces west toward the open Gulf.
