Pattaya is Thailand’s closest major beach destination to Bangkok at 147 kilometres southeast, a 2-hour drive from Suvarnabhumi Airport. What began as a fishing village in the 1960s has grown into a city of 320,000 permanent residents that receives over 9 million visitors annually across its 4-kilometre beachfront, Walking Street nightlife zone, and 20-plus golf courses within an hour’s drive.

Pattaya’s climate is tropical wet and dry with three seasons: a hot, humid rainy period from May through October (average 1,100mm annual rainfall, significantly drier than the Andaman coast), a cool dry season from November through February, and a hot season March through April reaching 33degC (91degF).

The city’s proximity to Bangkok makes it a weekend escape for Thais and a base for visitors who want beach access without the flight south to Phuket or Samui. U-Tapao Airport (UTP) 45 minutes south handles flights from Russian and Chinese charter routes, while most international visitors fly into Bangkok and transfer by road.

Pattaya Weather Overview

Pattaya sits in the Gulf of Thailand’s eastern seaboard rain shadow, receiving just 1,100mm of annual rainfall compared to Phuket’s 2,200mm and Koh Samui’s 1,960mm. The dry season (November to February) brings clear skies, 30degC (86degF) highs, low humidity, and calm seas , this is Pattaya’s peak tourist window when hotel rates are highest.

March and April are the hot season, reaching 33degC (91degF) with rising humidity. The rainy season (May through October) brings afternoon and evening thunderstorms averaging 150 to 180mm per month; rain tends to be heavy but brief at 1 to 2 hours. September is the wettest month at 220mm across 17 rain days.

December is the driest month at just 8mm. Water temperature ranges from 28degC to 30degC (82-86degF) year round. The Gulf’s water clarity is lower than the Andaman Sea due to suspended sediment from river outflow; Pattaya Beach water quality is variable and regularly tested by the Pattaya City Municipality, with results posted on the city’s environmental Facebook page.

Pattaya Seasonal Snapshot

  • Cool Dry (November to February): 30degC (86degF), 8 sunshine hours, minimal rain. Peak season with highest hotel prices. Pattaya International Music Festival in November draws 400,000 attendees across four stages on Pattaya Beach.
  • Hot (March to April): 33degC (91degF), infrequent rain. Songkran (April 13-19, extended in Pattaya) fills Beach Road with the country’s longest water fight. Hotel rates 20 to 30 percent below peak.
  • Rainy (May to October): 150 to 220mm monthly rainfall, mostly afternoon storms, sunny mornings. Hotel prices drop 40 to 50 percent. September is wettest. The sea stays warm and swimming is fine outside of storm hours.
