Logroño is the capital of La Rioja and the region’s food and wine hub, set on the Ebro River where the Camino de Santiago crosses northern Spain. It is a working city of about 151,000 people that draws visitors for its tapas street, Calle del Laurel, and for easy access to hundreds of Rioja wineries within a 45-minute drive. The climate is continental Mediterranean: hot, dry summers averaging 22.8°C (73°F) in July, cool winters around 5.9°C (43°F) in January, and only about 405mm of rain a year.
Most people treat Logroño as a two- or three-day stop: an evening pincho crawl on Calle del Laurel, a morning bodega tour, and a day trip to the wine towns of Haro or Laguardia. The city is compact enough to walk end to end in half an hour, which makes it a low-effort base for exploring the whole Rioja region. The guides below cover everything from the monthly weather to where to stay.
Logroño Weather at a Glance
Logroño sits in the Ebro Valley at 384m (1,260 ft), which gives it colder winters and hotter summers than the coast. The full breakdown by month is in the Logroño weather by month guide.

Logroño Location and How It Shapes the Weather
Logroño lies in the far north of Spain, 105km south of Bilbao and about 340km north of Madrid, in the narrow La Rioja region that follows the Ebro River. The valley traps heat in summer and lets cold air settle in winter, which is why the city swings from 35°C heatwaves to frosty January nights. To the south, the Sierra de la Demanda range catches Atlantic rain, leaving the valley comparatively dry at 405mm a year. For travel logistics, the Logroño travel tips guide covers every route in.
