Vigo is Galicia’s largest city and the biggest fishing port in Europe, set on the southern shore of the Ría de Vigo estuary in northwest Spain. Its warm-summer Mediterranean climate brings mild, wet winters and reliably dry summers, with about 1,695mm of rain a year concentrated from October to December. This guide covers the city’s weather, the best time to visit, its beaches and neighborhoods, and where to stay.

Welcome to Vigo

Vigo runs on its port. The city of about 295,000 people (480,000 in the metro area) grew around one of the world’s busiest fishing docks, and the estuary still shapes daily life, from the oyster stalls of Casco Vello to the ferries heading for the Cíes Islands. You’ll spend most of your time between the old town, the 19th-century Ensanche, and the Samil beachfront.

Vigo Weather at a Glance

Vigo averages 12.2°C (54°F) in January and 25.2°C (77°F) in August. Annual rainfall is about 1,695mm, one of the highest figures of any Spanish city, but it falls on roughly 126 days and concentrates in autumn and winter. July is the driest month at 40mm, November the wettest at 236mm.

Summer is the season to plan around. July and August bring 295 and 282 sunshine hours respectively, with sea temperatures peaking around 19°C (66°F). Winters are mild, with frost rare at sea level and snow effectively unknown, though December 1978 once saw 925.6mm of rain in a single month. The record high is 40.8°C (105°F), set on 7 August 2016.

Location and Climate Influences

Vigo sits on the southern shore of the Ría de Vigo, a flooded river valley that opens onto the Atlantic, about 30km north of the Portuguese border. The estuary and the surrounding hills moderate temperatures, so Vigo rarely gets very hot or very cold. The same Atlantic exposure drives the heavy autumn and winter rain, while the summer high-pressure systems bring the city its reliably dry July and August.
