Cáceres is a UNESCO World Heritage city in Spain’s Extremadura region, known for one of the best-preserved medieval walled old towns in Europe. It sits on the Spanish meseta at 459 m elevation, which gives it very hot, dry summers and mild winters. This guide covers the climate, the best months to visit, what to see and do, and where to stay.

Welcome to Cáceres

Most people first enter Cáceres through the Plaza Mayor, the arcaded square pressed against the old town wall, then pass under the Arco de la Estrella into the Ciudad Monumental. Inside, some 30 stone towers and fortified palaces line lanes that have barely changed since the 16th century, and storks nest on the rooftops from March to August. It is a city for walking slowly, eating Iberian pork and Torta del Casar cheese, and using the long Spanish evenings to sit out in the squares.

Cáceres Weather at a Glance

Cáceres has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa), tempered by Atlantic air and its 459 m altitude. Annual rainfall is 551 mm and sunshine totals 2,922 hours, one of the highest figures in mainland Spain. Rain falls mainly from October to December and in spring, while July and August are almost bone-dry.

July is the hottest month, averaging a high of 33.7°C (93°F) and a low of 18.8°C (66°F), with afternoon peaks past 38°C and records above 43°C.
