January
January is Girona’s coldest month with average highs of 13°C (55°F) and lows of 1°C (34°F). Frost is possible on clear nights. You will get about 5 hours of daily sunshine. Rainfall averages 50mm over 5-6 rainy days. Pack a warm coat, as the tramuntana wind can make it feel much colder. February warms slightly with highs of 14°C (57°F) and lows of 2°C (36°F). Sunshine increases to 6 hours daily. Rainfall drops to about 40mm. Occasional cold snaps from the Pyrenees can bring temperatures near freezing overnight. The almond trees in the surrounding countryside begin to blossom in late February. August matches July for heat with highs of 31°C (88°F) and lows of 18°C (64°F). Rainfall increases to about 55mm, often arriving as dramatic thunderstorms on 2 or 3 afternoons in the month. Humidity is higher than July. Sea temperatures peak at 25°C (77°F). Many shops and restaurants close for at least a week during the August holiday.
September
September cools to highs of 27°C (81°F) and lows of 15°C (59°F). You will get 8 hours of sunshine. Rainfall jumps to about 75mm, often heavy. The sea stays warm at 24°C (75°F) through mid-month. Early September still feels like summer, but by the equinox the light softens and the evenings need a sweater. Great month for combining city sightseeing with beach days.
October
October brings highs of 22°C (72°F) and lows of 11°C (52°F). This is the wettest month with about 85mm of rain over 7 to 8 days. Sunshine drops to 6 hours. The rain can be persistent for a day or two rather than passing showers. The sea temperature falls to 21°C (70°F). Autumn colours in the Devesa Park are worth seeing.
November
November cools noticeably with highs of 17°C (63°F) and lows of 5°C (41°F). Expect 5 hours of sunshine and about 70mm of rain. The first frosts of the season are possible in late November. Sea temperature drops to 17°C (63°F). The city quietens but the Christmas lights go up in the last week.
December
December sees highs of 13°C (55°F) and lows of 2°C (36°F). Sunshine is at its minimum with 4 to 5 hours. Rainfall averages 55mm. Frost is common on clear nights. The Christmas market in Placa de la Independencia and the festive lighting make the Barri Vell atmospheric. Pack layers and a waterproof coat. The sea cools to 15°C (59°F).
