The first thing you notice crossing the Pont de les Peixateries Velles, the red iron footbridge designed by Gustave Eiffel’s firm in 1877, is the row of brightly painted houses reflected in the Onyar River. This is Girona’s postcard image. Beyond the river, the Barri Vell climbs steeply toward the cathedral, whose 90-step Baroque stairway doubled as the Great Sept of Baelor in Game of Thrones. The medieval lanes of the Call, the Jewish Quarter, are a maze of stone archways and cobbled passages that have barely changed since the 13th century. The Fires de Sant Narcis festival (late October to early November) fills the city with correfocs, castells, and fairground attractions. November is cool (17°C / 63°F highs) and quieter.
- Winter (December to February): Cool and quiet with highs of 13 to 14°C (55 to 57°F) and overnight lows near freezing. December brings the Christmas market in Placa de la Independencia. January is the cheapest month for hotels, with rates 20 to 30 percent below summer peaks. Clear winter days offer crisp views of the snow-capped Pyrenees from the city walls.

Location and Climate Influences
Girona sits at 70 metres elevation in the Ter River valley, roughly 30km inland from the Mediterranean coast. This inland position gives it a slightly more continental climate than coastal Costa Brava towns: summer afternoons run 2 to 3 degrees warmer and winter nights 2 to 3 degrees colder. The Gavarres massif to the east and the Pyrenean foothills to the north create a rain shadow that moderates precipitation (about 700mm annually). The tramuntana, a dry north wind funneling through the Pyrenean passes, can make winter days feel significantly colder than the air temperature suggests, while summer sea breezes from the southeast provide some afternoon relief.
